link baiting means to discuss about a site or a link, the best example can be about the paid links and matt cutts, that really helped matt get a lot of traffic to his blog making people talk about a site of link, to discuss on a site!
If you have a blog or a content based site, it is fairly easier to do link baiting. But if you have an ecommerce site which only sells products it becomes harder. I apologize for contracting you, but I feel that link bait has been discussed since long before those social bookmarking sites became important. Matt popularized it in 2006 - but he didn't coin the phrase by any means. In the old days getting traffic was done by link trading, link bait, search engine submission and optimization (infoseek) - in that order.
Here's a great example of link baiting from shoemoney blog... Al Gore Get A DUI - Lots Of Other Drugs Found pretty shady if you ask me.... but I guess people who get $132K checks from Adsense and show them off can do no wrong... LOL, most of us are lucky if we can scrape $123 from adsense. I don't undertand what this guy is doing to make that knd of money... plus, his blog really sucks.... almost as bad as Matt Cutts, full of garbage and self promotion... well, the worms eat up anything...
Shoe has got it like that. More power to him. I think that link baiting is garbage. But it depends on your market niche. I'm waiting for Matt Cutts to start posting about Excessive Link Baiting and link baiting penalities for non-relevant link baiting.

Link baiting is not garbage. Basically what you do is make something really cool, pic, vid, article, game, ect. Something that people would share, and you get them to do the advertising for you. Its a good way to expload a site. Say you show 2 people, then they show two people, all of them show two people ect. 2*2=4 4*2=8 8*2=16 16*2=32 4+8+16+32=60 and thats just showing two people.
