Many people do. Either from selling links in their high PR sites, pay per impression or PPC ads.

I make money through adsense.. which is advertising too...

There are tons of ways to make money online..
If you don't have a lot of capital I'd recommend you try AFFILIATE MARKETING.
I've got a few websites, some earning revenue from adsense but most income comes from my affiliate marketing efforts.
A previous thread of mine might be able to explain the marketing process.

    "
    HI ALL
From here on I want you to think only one thing - ADVERTISING
The most important thing in internet marketing is to be heard and try to reach the masses.
Bottom line - The more people you can reach, the more money you can make!

I will give you a brief guide as to how the whole marketing process works:

    1) Select a target market - golfers, money-makers, anyone- Again I'll say it: The more people you reach, the money you make - Try choosing something that you know alot about and you can provide good content on.
    2) Design a Lead Capture Site with an enticing offer to lure your potential customer to give you his contact details (name & e-mail add.). By capturing their details they'll always remain a potential customer as you can contact them when you like offering them anything you like as they opted to receive mail from you!
** Don't ever sent traffic straight to affiliate sites, make sure you get details first **
To have a lead capture page you'll need 3 things: Domain Name, Web Hosting, Auto Responder.
domain name and hosting you can get from http:// hostgator.com
auto responder you can get from http:// getresponse.com
    3) Find products to promote. Either products that are your own or products that you an affiliate of. The products can be anything - A digital products (e-book or membership site) or even a real, solid product (cell-phones or golf clubs). http:// clickbank.com is a good place to start.
** YOUR OPTIONS ARE LIMITLESS **
4)Once those are out of the way - all that's left is to drive traffic to YOUR lead capure site. This is where you have to THINK ADVERTISING.
Make yourself known (brand your name or product). If you want to have your subscribers/leads always buy from you, make sure not to sell them crap; provide with good and interesting content and products.
There are tons of ways of driving traffic to your sites - pay per click, articles, e-zine, forums, blogs, and so much more (that's just online) - radio, newpapers, etc are examples of offline methods..

    5) Repeat this process targeting all different types of markets.

I make enough to cover the costs of the hosting. So...I guess not. No net profit really. But I like doing what I do so it's not that bad.

I would say that most people earn money throug advertising. That is the most popular business model for websites at the moment.

If people weren't making money off advertising then you wouldn't see it very many places. Since There are ads plastered all over pretty much every site on the net, I think its resonable to assume that yes, people are making money.
