How relevant should links be?

    Hello,
    Just curious about link relevancy:

I have a site that's main function is to let people download a piece of software for creating Wordsearch puzzles, the site is used mainly by teachers.

So should i get links from software related, puzzle related, or education related sites?

    Thanks

Ideally, yes. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't get other links you can get.

In some scenarios it's impossible to only get related links. Take a news site. It wouldn't make sense if 95% of their links was from other news sites.

Just get as many links as you can whilst trying to keep a decent balance.

yeah, those sites can be related to your site. i think G uses words to check that sites are related or not . if you are sharing same words on both sites, i believe those sites are related

ultimately you only need to focus on the relevancy among websites that Google recognizes.

If G doesn't recognize, no matter what you think your is related to such and such websites, it won't matter.

personally, i'd focus on puzzle and "teacher"/education related sites. I think with Google searches those would probably be the most common, so backlinks will help in those queries

The sites from where you get links have to be related, but an 'extremely' related might actually be your competitor. So you wouldnt want to do an exchange with them.

IMO, for your puzzles, getting links from software related, puzzle related, or education related sites will all be good.

Related and non competitors whenever is possible.

Some times there are more thant good offers from non related sites, and I accept the swap too.
    Can't hurt.

Another thing to consider is how many searches the various themes get too. Use overture or a similar service to see if "puzzle creator" is more popular than just educational or software results. Another thing to consider is just wordpress add-ons or modules.

In my opinion they should be very relevant. you dont want a sex toys shop linking to you when you sell computers, and vice versa.

Lots of directories have nice categories for education and the good news is that they are usually not too full!!

Here are a couple of examples from my directories:

PR4 Education Category with only 11 other links.

PR4 Reference Category with only 3 links in it.

Relevant links is the important factor in choosing keywords. I suggest that you get link from education related site.

Thanks everone, that has been very helpful. I think as you say education and puzzle are the major exchanges to target.
