Sitemap.xml or sitemapindex.xml ???

Do I need both my sitemaps.xml and a sitemapsindex.xml on the root of my domain??

They both seem to have the same info in but I cannot find anywhere that says you must use one or the other - or is it the same thing??

http://ascinv.com/ - do you think if you list your url on all the threads we will get indexed quicker:)

Some of my sites use just "sitemap.html"; why are you thinking you need those two specifically? :)

I would highly recommend you to use sitemap.xml as it's suppose to be the standard (not yet recognized by any authority) but hope it will be approved as standard soon.

Unlike this you can have it a name of your choice (similar to the case of favicon) if you use different name you have to link to that name and submit that url.

Btw, look at the google itself:-

    http://www.google.com/sitemap.xml

    they are using sitemap.xml

I originally put a sitemap in every folder for each adsense site but then read somewhere that I should create a sitemap index to point to all sitemaps on my domain - did I not need to do this?? Is it over kill ?? I'm sure I read it on Google but can't find the article now

If your domain has more than 50,000 url's or if the sitemap is larger than 10mb then you need to use several sitemaps and a sitemap index, which links to the sitemap.xml files.

I need to do this with my site soon as the sitemap is stuck at 40,000 url's for some reason!
