Question to directory owners - Dealing with Pending payments

Discussion in 'Directories' started by LeopardAt1, May 2, 2007.

    Hi all,

just wondering how you all deal with pending PayPal payments?

If your had a policy that stated paid submissions are reviewed within 48 hrs, do you first wait for the payment to clear and then review?

Does anyone list sites before the payment clears? How often do you receive pending payments?

    Thanks,
    Leopard

I know the obvious problems with the more intelligent users but is there big reason not to use the return tool paypal provides?

    <input type="hidden" name="return" value="http://www.myurl.com/activate_link.php&link_id=1234">

After the potential customer pays, the above link is shown and the visitor clicks to return to your site. Your php then activates the link and sends you an email. If the "smarter users" bypasses the paypal payment you could then de-activate the link and ban the domain/ip/user whatever.

Any reason not to rely on that system?

Are you referring to eChecks? If so, I'll review the submission; but if approved it's not added until the payment clears.

I also wouldn't consider a submission as "paid" until the funds cleared.

I think I would approve it. It is easy to remove the link if the payment does not clear.
I was in this situation twice (as a submitter), and both times directory owners approved my link right away.

I see, so when it clears does phpLD automatically update the listing as "paid" inside the admin section?

    Oh and yes, PayPal eChecks...

No it doesn't. When you get the notification of a cleared eCheck payment from Paypal you can approve the listing at that time if you choose to leave it in the pending queue.

Having been burnt in the past, I find it easier now to just wait till the funds clear.

I'm with Malcom on this, I review and if acceptable the submission gets listed. If the check doesn't clear, that IP,domain, and email will get filtered and the listing deleted. I think that's fair

i will give the benefit of the doubt and approve it first. So far, i've not been disappointed. It's so easy to simply remove the site if it does not clear, but if it clears, it speaks alot abt your confidence & trust in customers, which is what i like to give unless proven otherwise ;)

For echecks, we used to go ahead and approve/review. But then a trend started where some didn't clear. I think people thought, oh they approved, so now I don't have to worry about the payment clearing.

So now we only review upon the payment clearing. However, we do send an email to each echeck client explaining that once payment clears we will review the link.

Since we started that process, 100% of echecks have been clearing.

Bad idea. If the e-check doesn't clear, you've just paid someone for the privilege of ripping you off. Don't refund an e-check until it clears.

    Exactly :)

I review links as soon as I can and I approve those who are ment to be there. Then I go to Payment option and see if they paid or not.
Sometimes I have to digg around as phpLD doesnt tell the method of payment. I have 3 Payment methods for my Directory ;)

You said "paid submissions are reviewed within 48 hrs"

So until you do not get payments (that is when the echeck payments are cleared) till then, i don't think you are bounded to review the site and include it in your directory.

So all you do is wait....till the echeck payments are cleared, and after that you have 48 hours to clear those payment. :)

I never got an e-check submission for my directory thus far, but I will approve it anyway before it clears. If it doesn't I can always remove it anyway.
