Well.. - The title text is that bit larger and more /normal/ on the 250x250 square - In most cases, there are 3 ads in the square and 4 in the rectangle Of course, I'm bored out my tit but I had the idea that the bigger title text with the square could draw more attention to the ads, and perhaps a slight increase in CTR would be had as it looks less like a bunch of ads then the rectangle. So.. which performs best for YOU? Pete
Large rectangle by far. AdSense also recently named it as the top performing ad unit as well. They named the top 3 performing ad units, and the 250x250 didn't make the list.
That's odd. Personally I'm far more attracted to the titles in the square and far more inclined to read that first advert title - I just find myself doing it automatically, I skip over the 'Ads by Google' because it's so small in comparison to the first ad title. Maybe it's because I'm so used to looking at the large rectangles smaller titles. *shrug* I'm giving it a whirl on one of my pages for a test anyway. I'm suprised it didn't make the list.. very! Pete
Hint: the square always shows all three ads and does not show just one like the others have been doing. I can't show the large rectangle anymore because it only shows two and it mucks up the look of the page, so I've switched them all to 250x250 square.
It has to depend on every sites layout, on my software site the large 336x250 ads look horrible, but the horizontal rectangle ads look great.
I have some sites where I use the 336X250 but some sites it just doesn't fit so I use the 300X250 (not 250X250) with equal results.
I only use 250x250 because the bigger version, even just a little bit bigger, looks atrocious on the site. I'd rather have the 250 blend in instead of making a few more cents and turning the site ugly.
I've just started using the Large Rectangle on my homepage -www.mysteriouspeople.com and tried to blend it into the content. CTR has gone up but it's early days. I use the Wide Skyscraper on almost all of my other pages - eg www.mysteriouspeople.com/Matthew_Manning
