Are .com domains preferred to .info ones?

No difference for SEO. Huge difference in 'mind share' - the public thinks in terms of .com, to get a .other domain just means that you are sending about 50% of your 'returning traffic' to someone else's website. Always go .com if you possibly can.

    Best wishes...

For Google, .com, .net, and .org and the TLD of the country you are in seem to get preference in results. Try it yourself.

For Google, .info and .biz seem to rank loiwer than others, regardless of the strength of thier PageRank. The basic problem is that because they have a nasty popular reputation of being spammy, people don't click on them as often as others. Because of this low traffic (Google toolbar feeds your visited sites back to Google), Google ranks them lower (yes, Google tracks your pages visited and uses overall site popularity to help determine individual page rankings - duh!)

.info especially has a reputation of being spammy, such that I know more than one company that blocks all email coming from all .info domains.

For any serious work, I can always find a workable .com/.net/.org domain name instead of any .info or .biz domain name.

When in doubt, just run your own experiments.

I agree that .com is better from a user standpoint, but I wonder how much type in traffic websites get (of course you can track this, but I'm wondering in general).

There are very few sites that I type in url. If I haven't cleared my browser info, I'll do the type in and choose. Otherwise I tend to use a bookmark or will use a search engine.

I think forums are the only sites that I type in, and that's because I visit a couple of them regularly enough to have the url memorized. I'm paranoid about misspelling a url and ending up on a porn site. Like craigslist, or how my high school economics teacher typed in .com instead of .gov when she wanted to show us the White House site.
