1and1 was giving free domain name+hosting for 6 months. Any one using them and passed those six months? How much they charge after 6 moths?
im using an old free account i got it for 3 yrs.. and its great no downtime fast download & page loads only 1 mysql and the webstats suck compaired to cpanel but the good outway the bad

my offer will be getting over soon (6 months) and now is the worry part. I have got 3/10 google rank for this domain, will they not let me have my domain (transfer) for a fee. Or I have to go with the package they offer. They had great campaign though
I got a free 3yr special too. I agree with bloodwrath. I'll likely not continue with them when the trial is over. I just don't like the account limitations nor the control panel they offer. Because I decided this early on, I did not build any sites on that account that I could not easily move later.
I got that offer too, and I'll definitely move along at the end, since it's much too limiting. The sites run well, though. The 3 year special was when they started offering hosting in the US. They're a German company, as I recall, and decided to attract attention here that way.
I had LOTS of down time with the "3 year special" for the 9 months. Ended up moving most my stuff off them. Service seems to have improved since then, but it's still hit or miss. Can't complain much about a 3 FREE years of hosting though... I'd look around a little more, 1and1 would not be my first choice for shared hosting.
LOL... That reminds me of a series of fake commercials that SNL ran years ago about a bank that did not have accounts, loans, etc. All they did was make change. How did they make any money? Volume. In 1&1's case, I'm sure they have the capital to bankroll the offer at the start - they are not a small company from what I understand. I'm sure they were planning on having webmasters well entrenched on their servers by the time the free period expired.
I'm guessing that for the people who got a free domain with the test drive, it is actuallyy registered to 1&1. It seems like a pretty nice con- let people build up a decent site while you own the domain and force them to stick with you after 6 months! Is this true?
No, actually I've transferred out many domains from them with no problems. The free 3 years was actually a nice package, could host pretty much as many domains as you wanted on it. I think they weren't really prepared for the response they got from the offer and overloaded the servers with shared accounts.
Okay, I got email telling that my offer period is going to expire sept 30 and I need to start paying up hereafter. However their prices are on higher side (9.9x $/month) and there are cheaper alternatives available for same or better configurations ( I like what godaddy offers at 3.7$/pm) I haven't done domain transfer yet, so I me kinda new to it. How does it work? Can someone give me some brief and how to go about it. Many thanks in advance
well 1st get the new hosting account upload all files to the new host verify all is working on the new host THEN move the DNS to the new host then you'll have NO downtime That how i do it and it works great
okay, I got this part of changing the DNS to different server (I see place in 1and1 admin where I can change DNS settings). Will this totally disassociate me from 1and1? How would I change dns in future if I have to?
Changing registrars is not the same as changing web hosts (necessarily). It is a more complicated process. If you want to change registars, the new registrar should guide you through the process.
if u have the domain & hosting with 1and1 then u would just move your domains hosting to the new host( change the DNS settings) and only use 1and1 to contol where the DNS would go when u cancel your hosting package you wont have the same options available in the 1and1 control panel but will only be able to control the domain. but thats all u need anyways
I've had no problems with 1and1 as a registrar, they are quite cheap, and it has always peformed well.
I'm also on the 3 years free plan, hosting several simple sites there. Only had one major problem when the hardware I was running on at their dataserver started throwing errors... we could identify the error on our side, but 1and1 would only accept support communication via email. When I called the 800 number, they refused to open a ticket because free accounts do not have phone support. Took them a half day to things and another half day for response to the first of many support emails I sent. I have my domains hosted at godaddy and pointing to 1and1. For free, 1and1 is definitely worth what you're paying.
