Just thought I will share an article that i've recently written in my blog on this topic of on-page and off-page SEO optimization. General On-page SEO main aspects/methods. · Hyperlink Title Tags · Meta Tags · Header (H1) Tags · Formating Tags · Keywords · Content · URLs · Outgoing Links · ALT images Dos and Don’ts for On-Page Optimization - Use the keywords only once in the hyperlink and alt-image tags - Overall key density should be between 10 and 20%, primary keyword density about 5-6% and secondary key about 2-3%. - H1 tags should contain the primary keywords. - Bold all the keywords in their first appearance, and apply repeat bolding only for the primary keyword in its last occurrence. - Position the primary keywords in the first and the last paragraphs, if possible, in the first line of the paras. - Use single-word keywords. They perform better than split keywords. - No duplicate contents or hidden contents (texts or links with the same color as that of the background) - Avoid cloaking (a process by which a user is redirected to a different page from an original page directed by the search engine) Off-page optimization refers to the process of improving the performance of the website by off-page practices such as · Keyword research · Encouraging in-bound links from high ranking sites · Use of different keywords in the referred links · Tracking the traffic Dos and Don’ts for Off-Page Optimization · Encourage the incoming links by partnering with websites with better page ranking. · Avoid link farming. · Do not direct the incoming links to pages that have no relevant data for the link. · Do not direct multiple incoming links to a single page. · Do not duplicate keywords in the inbound links. · Do not use hidden inbound links. · Conduct a survey on the success of the keyword/phrase. · Make a list of new keywords and test their effectiveness with the similar websites. · Make necessary changes in the keyword if the old keyword does not find better effects. For more details, can refer to my blog as indicated in my profile. CONSTRUCTIVE Comments will be appreciated.
oh, it simply means to reduce the number of keywords as far as possible. For e.g. its better to target 'search engine optimisation' than 'website search engine optimisation' or 'website search engine optimisation techniques'. But you are right that perhaps the way it was phrased might confuse some, point noted, tks!
Computing for your keyword density makes your head spin, meaning you can do SEO without doing it. Just look for related words and everything would be just fine. Or you may say do not buy from link farms.
A good article basically. However, I would like to add the First Principle of On-page optimization: Make sure your page is crawlable It is of no use if a great content page cannot be crawled by the bots because: 1. It make use of fully Flash-powered navigation menu. 2. It uses a very interactive navigation menu.... powered by JavaScript. 3. It contains session ids and long parameters tagging to the urls. 4. The page needs authentication Hope it helps
good point KC TAN..... this is VERY important, ideally your website should be designed using CSS & XHTML and they should validate...this will greatly improve the crawlabilty of your website
A few things: How do you make sure your CSS & XHTML validate? What do you mean by saying "The page needs authentication"? And what exactly is Link Farming? I heard the phrase before, and have an idea what it is, but I would like some clarification. Thanks for the info!
there are various sites that will help u check your code and validate whether they confirm to CSS & XHTML, just do a search and u shld find them. Page needs authentication means those pages that require password to enter. SE's spiders will have problems getting to those pages. Link farming? Do a simple search on G on you'll find the answer. Don't like to spoon feed those who cannot be bothered to find the answers.
- CSS & XHTML can be validated in the validator tool used by w3c.org. - In short for password authenticated sites. - The process of exchanging reciprocal links with Websites in order to increase search engine performance.
You call it spoon-feeding, I call it answering a question...semantics. Thanks for the help, it is appreciated. Thanks boyponga...the term reciprocal clarified the concept.
I would like to say that you also need to add "Have a sitemap for google, yahoo, and msn." to that list...pretty good article, I like the do's and don'ts.
Seems like some great tips in here Will add some of these to my personal folder of things to read I am doing so many things at once sometimes..
LInk Farming means , those sites with 100's or if not 1000's of links on one page, if a web page contains more than 20-30 links you can consider it as a link farm. So its always good to stay away from these link farms and trade links with sites which are not in the nature of "link farms"
<My SE0 Pwns Your SE0> Y0u seem to f0rget the m0st imp0rtant fact0r of all. Remember to keep in mind of "Veteran Status" my young Jedi. Veteran Status = Age of Domain What I am saying is you can have all seo you mentioned above and just give me a "clean" domain from like 1995-1998-ish and I'll show you how to get it done. -D
Love the article. I would like to add that in the beginning, in "on page optimization" dont try to stuff it with keywords and even if u can avoid h1s so let it be. After a while u can do this stuff.
