do people actually go to directories? or are webmasters only buying directory links for the sake of PR?
Oh no, not at all. I don't have it. I was just curious because I use craigslist often, that's all... Just curiosity...
Some people actually go to some directories (the really popular ones). The other directories (usually phpLD directories) are just for PR.
I do get visitors as I do make some money off adsense from directories but they are not really a lot. However, if you offer a niche directory, the probability of attracting real eyeballs is higher. People love a one-stop place to finding information.
Niche directorys And not for PR for backlinks and help geting rankings in SE that brings traffic = $$$ that's the formula
you mean people don't use directories instead of search engines? I wonder if Google has caught on to this paradigm shift to spam directories...??
Building PR from directories is difficult these days as Google have really cut down on the value of these links. They can easily been understood as directory links and therefore paid links. The most affective way of building inbound links and high PR is blog advertising (having bloggers write articles about your site and linking back to you in the content of their posts) The link will be on the keyword of your choice and can not be detected as a paid link since it's in the standard content thread of a blog post. I have used a few of these sites allowing advertisers to use a network of bloggers, kind of like ebay connects sellers with buyers.
i sometimes go to certain directories, but very very rarely. They're just for the PR like others have said in this topic.
My sites very rarely receive traffic from directories and they are listed in all of the popular directories.
I do get the seldom search engine referrer, but they are very few. So, I suppose directories are mostly for PR.
I occasionally use directories. I can't remember what the topic was, but the other day I wanted to look something up but the words I was typing into the SE weren't giving me the results I was looking for. So I used a directory, found out the lingo of the niche, and then used a SE.
For me, it's all about PR. I personally do not go to directories.. except photoshop tutorial ones. For the rest, google does the job..
The problem is directories generally have very poor rankings for any search term besides with "directory" in it or "add url" etc. The odd visitor that does land on a directory page has 30 link options to choose from giving your link even less chance of a hit.
I think it is just for PR. I am just starting out and have a few site and I just want the sites I do have to gain more exposure. I don't think the majority of internet users go to directories...
