I've never thought of it that way, but you're right. .info does seem cheap, at least to doaminers.

I disagree, if .info makes sense for the site, I'll use it. Premium .info are selling for 5 figures, so there's no doubting the extension is gaining respect.

I must agree with you, and remember that they were FREE for long time so twice the perception of being developing a cheap site and the reason why most spammers began with their crappy MFA sites.

.info looks a tad spammy but those links with "-" look even worse.

Many people shared the same sentiment with 800 numbers when they were first offering 888, 877, and 866 as the three digit codes. Now its pretty much accepted.

To tell the truth - the average NON WEBMASTER web surfer doesn't give a toss what the domain name is - they are looking for content.

I use .com .net and .info domains and I have never had traffic problems because of a .info site when it is promoted.

Sure, Afilias has been saying this since INFO were released more than 5 years ago, and then when they had to offer them for free due to lack of interest

Agreed info's are junk, they are the poor mans domain. Good as a throw away domain to put a spammy proxy or MFA site on, get your 99c worth then let em drop.

Well here's what we do ...

For our main sites we use .com mostly, then .net ... but for sites that are internal to our team or organization we use .info as they are training and information sites for our team members and leaders ... we set those pages so the spiders can't crawl them, we don't list them in the search engines or directories, and we don't advertise them ... they are internal only ...

I think using .info serves it's purpose if your site is purely informational, such as the sites we use it for, but even for external sites. People seem to use the .com for everything no matter what the content is and that's not REALLY the way it's suppose to be. Thank the marketing companies for that ... everything you see, hear and read is .com anymore ... the general public doesn't even know what most of the domain extensions stand for so everyone just uses .com :)

Now, when investing in domains we usually look at .com and sometimes .net but it all depends on the traffic, rankings and previous usage of the domain ...

    IMHO :D

    My usual reactions to extensions:

    .biz, sounds sleezy to me
.info, depending on the topic either good or spammy
    .com/net/org, more professional
.mobi, wtf? just seems out there
.tv, great if it's a media site
.co.uk, .co.ca, etc, perhaps better than .com
    .cc, spam alert

I'm not sure why but those are my reactions when i first see a URL with those extensions, even if it's wrong. =P

Most of my proxies are .info and a lot of my turnkey sites. I don't see anything wrong with it.
    I HATE the .ps ones!!!

to all those who dissagree, understand this

you get what you pay for.

There's a reason .info domains are sold cheaper than the rest think about it ;)

    I've registered these .infos recently:

    CheapDesign.info
    CreatePDF.info

I think they're not bad and I was surprised that they were still available to register. In my opinion, if a .info website provides some kind on INFOrmation, it's a good choice. E.g.: CreatePDF.info - information on how to create PDF documents (maybe even online).

I get .info's because they are cheap... and most of the time the .com or .net is taken! Also I agree the extension is irrelevant 98% of the time!

I agree with the OP, even though INFO's are good for some pages such as proxies. Otherwise I would go with .com and .org depending on the content. I'm not really fond of .net.
