Testing the water on selling a mid-high $XXX per month website

Hi guys,

I'm toying with the idea of selling one of my sports related sites.

Money wise, the site (which is a little over 2 years old), is making more each month. January was $300, Feb $400, March $507, and April (month to date) is $755. April's figure will likely come in at around $850-$900. The site could more than likely be making more money, however right now, I am making money via AdSense, and via an advertising network. I've also just put affiliate code on the site, however I've literally only just started to do that.

Traffic wise, the site has done 3 million impressions this month, with six figure uniques. Like the money, the traffic is improving month on month, and for the past few months, we've consistently done over 2 million impressions.

The site has over 5,500 pages of unique content. While the current format is not really low maintenance, a couple of really simple, quick changes to how it works could ensure you have a low maintenance site.

As I said, I'm only toying with the idea of selling, and although I know some who go by the "12x monthly revenue" method of buying/selling may be put off my asking price, I will say now that the layout, content, and methods of getting traffic to the website also adds to the price.

For those reasons, I will be looking for a $xx,xxx sum to consider selling.

So 4 months of earnings, or was the site earning for the first two years, but only now just taking off? Also where is your traffic coming from? Organic, PPC, link buys? Why was the site not making much nor getting much traffic for the first two years? All of these questions answered will go into what a real evaluation of the site should be.

 

The site was earning low $xxx in 2006, and has grown in terms of traffic and revenue month on month.

The traffic is organic. I don't spend a penny on PPC, and I've only spent a minimal amount on link buys (and those have been since I signed up here a few weeks ago). The only real money I spend each month is on hosting. I don't spend a penny usually on advertising, as I don't have a real need to. The links I've purchased have been to do with PR rather than traffic. The site is PR4 at time of writing. All traffic has been as a result of hard work, and building relationships with a couple of big mainstream websites who send traffic our way.

First of all, it's not 12x gross. It's 12x net income. Otherwise a site making $1,000 per month and spending $1,000 on Adwords would sell for the same price as a site making $1,000 and spending $0 on ads.

Net income assumes all costs have been deducted. Including a fair worth for webmaster time. Otherwise a site that's a full time job will be worth the same as one which requires no work at all. It is also a legal requirement to disclose all costs (including time costs) and not disclosing the time cost could be construed as fraud. read more.

No, it doesn't. They all provide the foundation for your current earnings. Without those you wouldn't earn what you do now. So their worth is already factored in. You can't factor it in twice.

- All content on the site is organic.
- Maintenance of the site can be made considerably lower maintenance with ease and within minutes by modifying some code. I can advise on how to do this after purchase.
- Reason for selling is partially to explore other business ideas I've been toying around with, and partially family related. However, I will only sell if the offer is right.
