That's because the search engine recognizes a site with the www and a site without the www as two seperate websites.

add this code to your .htaccess to redirect all non-www traffic to www

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain.com
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

    Code (markup):

Will it affect the PR rank if say you paid a link to advertise your site with www and then you paid another link to advertise your site without the www and no .htaccess file. So does that mean the pr will go into each of those sites? If so, it is wise to use either all your link with www or without. Correct? Sorry if my question is confusing.
    Thanks again!

Hmm, what to do with the Webmaster Central Tool anyway? I only see you enter one URL, can you please explain a little more?

The webmaster central tool allows you to specify which domain is the domain you would prefer to have indexed by Google. I specify my domain without www. but I still also have the .htaccess file so that people who accidentally link to the domain with a www. will be redirected to the domain without the www.

    Go to http://www.google.com/webmasters/

Click on Webmaster tools (including Sitemaps)

    Enter your Google Account details

Click on Manage http://www.yoursite.com or if you don't have a website add one

On Diagonstic tab > Tools > Preffered domain

    Choose your preffered domain ...

I've done this and my domain PR is the same with or without the WWW.

I've never used scripts or redirections for my site ....

Hope this is usefull.Good luck ;)

Because "www.site.com" is a subdomain of "site.com". Just like "images.site.com" would be a different pagerank then "site.com". As was said it is considered to be a different site and also could be considered duplicate content by search engines.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdomain for more information on what a subdomain is.

The best and easiest is to have a .htaccess with the .htaccess file you don't have to worry about it being in every single file, but a php solution is okay also as long as you have it on ever single php file on your site.
