Better yet find a "how to make money online" membership site, send him to your affiliate link and make commission on every month he pays his dues.

I think you should show him what you do to make money online and let him decide if he wants to do the hard work or not.

Remember that the more you give and share the more you get back.

Send them to problogger. That's what I did every time someone asked me. I then tell them I spent 4 hours per day researching and writing articles, and even offered a couple to pay them to write something for my site if it was good. They ended up being not interested, "too much work".

I would say tell them what there is to know, the basics not the complete thing.. tell them everything and everyone has a unique way.. direct them to resources... dont tell them thing you learned, but how you learned them... easiest option of all... tell them you make money by actively doing r&d (rob and duplicate) and other things by spending hours figuring out what is worth trying... give 'em a challenge... let them learn some on their own.. and tell 'em once they know some stuff you guys could brainstorm more... but don't give away what you learn unless they have learned something on their own and can share knowledge with you or debate with your logic.

Thats just my perspective though... and just to clarify r&d(pun intended earlier) = get inspired... ;)

    cheers!!!

Nobody, even my family doesn't know what I am doing online. If you tell them what you do, they may think it is easy money, but it isn't.

If your friends are going to stop talking to you because you wont share your "secret" to wealth I suggest you find some new friends anyway.

What's most annoying is when people here keep PM'ing you questions that are basically like "I don't want to do a lot of work but want to get rich quick". Ughh...

I usually tell them to start on Ebay first since they have no clue about domains and html. If they 'get traction' on Ebay, then its time to start talking about a website.

Only one of my friends has taken the advice and run with it. He has the Ebay thing down, but he is a little gun shy of stepping up to a website yet. I hope he does.

The typical response is they want to have everything perfect before they start - thus they never start.

One of my friends was interested, but "my computer is too old". He got a new computer and then "I need a high speed internet connection". He got that, then it was "I need a new digital camera"... You get the picture :D

What a nice topic you started mate. You're friends are even better than mine, they sleep all time, no studies no worries (they are teenagers like me :)) at all.

They often ask me to teach them how to build a website. How they can earn money with freelance stuff.

I always replied them, if you can sleep for only 4 hours a day like me than you can do that all, other wise keep sleeping. I have spent more than four years to learn that all Languages, softwares and tools. Its not a matter of weeks, even month :).

I usually start giving primitive explanations of seo, marketing, monetization, etc - they soon start to think that it's way too hard.

Still, we shouldn't be so hard on the new people - I had serious trouble starting anything at first before it was too risky, I had no graphics' design skills, it was too much trouble and I wanted it easy, and so on.

Of course, I went through all of that. It was harsh realizing that the old saying "The free cheese is the one that is in the mousetrap" was almost absolutely true - you can get free stuff, but it's of low usefulness. (doesn't apply to people who do it because of their good will). However, now I can see my path clearly (a few steps of it at least). Was it worth it? Definetaly!

Most of mine friends think about making money online as of black magic or a personal atm cash machine.

When I tell them they have to work a know computing a little they "give up"

Most people who I meet seem to think that there's some quick ,easy magic thing that they can do to get make money online. I got started at this years ago when I read an article about a guy who kept watching his coworker open envelopes with checks in them every day during his lunch break. Eventually he worked up the nerve to ask the guy what the deal was. It involved mail order. Back then you could place classified ads selling recipes for a buck and make money. I tried mail order without success and then decided to convert everything over to the internet. After learning the major differences between mail order and intenet marketing I finally started to make soem money. It took awhile to learn the game but it has been well worth it.

One of the first things that I'll do is send them one of my SEO newsletters. If they are still interested after that then I'll work with them to help get an affiliate site set up. If they can handle that then I start walking them through some basic optimization stuff and point them in that direction. The worst of them are the women (sorry ladies) who actaully think that I'm going to do the work for them (for free too) so that they can make thousands online. I'll do it for my sister or her daughter but that's about as far as that goes.

Most of the time,as you all have already stated, they are just too lazy to do the months of work that gets the money flowing. The other case is that they just don't know how to do what they want to do. I can work with that. One friend of mine did very well online after I got him started. Another friend (a couple) did fairly well selling through eBay with no site at all.

Tell your friend this: "If there was an easy way to make lots of money by doing no work then why isn't everybody doing it? I must be crazy to be spending all these hours online finding traffic when there's an easier way."

I don't tell my friends they'd think I was mentally deranged if they knew the amount of time I spend online:D so its simple tell a white lie.
I play Battlefield 2 every night I'm part of a clan....what's a clan? there you go I can talk about that all night and that's for someone who has never been in one.I have a very enthusiastic friend who is though and so I know all about clans:D
