Interesting. So Google IS trying to take over the Internet. :p Well, at least in the advertising/publishing area.

Wow...well, good for google. They had too much cash on their hands, and this makes them stronger while dealing a blow to microsoft at the same time. The real winners must be the private equity firm that bought doubleclick for 1.1B in 2005. Pretty nice return!

    should be interesting.

Is this going to be like when they bought urchin, they gave it away for free.

Now they bought doubleclick, which is an ad-serving technology, like openads, but doesnt have its own network. Wonder are we all going to get free, amazing ad rotation services for free from double click?

Everyone isn't so enamoured by the Mighty Google. We'll see how the shareholders react to this one. Their share price dropped today.

It could just as easily backfire.

Excuse me. My math is not so good.
I know one million has six zeros which is 1,000,000
Could someone tell me how many zeros for one billion?
    Must be a big figure.

    Thank you very much.

Either of two numbers (see long and short scales for more detail):

    * 1,000,000,000 (one thousand million) - increasingly common meaning in English-language usage
    * 1,000,000,000,000 (one million million) - increasingly rare meaning in English-language usage; standard meaning in many other languages

    I doubt it.....

One need only look back 20 years when people made the same speculation about Microsoft and that is just one of quite a few here today going going gone... tomorrow.

I'm actually not too impressed with this since in the many many many circumstances I've dealt with doubleclick (usually at an employer's behest) I've always ended up walking away because they were ineffective, overpriced, and didn't care about support or improving their product. I almost think this is a name buy more than anything else since it's not like Double-click is serving any markets the ubiquitous adwords aren't already. As someone else already pointed out they're not actually a traditional ad network anyway, but rather an ad implementor if you will.

I'm sure DC will have important relationships with advertizers, but it'll probably be more about vertical integration than about pure reach. Since I am on the internet and pretending to be an expert I will say they probably paid too much.

Well, if I was going to pay $3.1 billion for something (ahahahahaha) I'd want to make sure I had some use for whatever it was I had bought.

So, somebody in Google sees either a good fit for something, or a way to get a stranglehold on a dangerous competitor. I'll be interested in seeing what pops out of this little deal over the next year or two.

What kind of information has or does Doubleclick have the ability to gather?
