Hi, if you go the phpbb forum contribution section of the php site and search for SEO you'll find a hack (SEO 2.0 i think its called) that includes the mod_rewrite. You can see a working example at http://www.beastcomputers.co.uk/forum/ I think this is what you're looking for.
that one i posted leaves the url's like: www.thisisthesite.com/boards/archive/o_t__t_105950__which-is-your-favorite-character.html
I won't bother doing it unless I can have the title in there... That one you posted looks good, I just want to see it more attractive to prospective clickers. I may have a go myself.
This looks like what I'm looking for... http://www.webmedic.net/released-phpbb-google-keyword-urls-110-vt2577.html
I use the able to know mod on my rugby forum and it is the mutts nuts. The only thing I didn't impliment was the mod that hides the signatures from the search engines. The site went from a few hundred pages indexed, to some 6000 or so within a couple of weeks.
I use the Able2Know MOD on three forums, without the mod_rewrite portion. It works very well indeed. The mod_rewrite is overkill and unnecessary.
Why do you say that? If you can get targetted words in the URL, it makes a pretty substantial difference.
Because I have a lot of pages indexed and popping up for relevant search terms with that MOD implemented and without mod_rewrite. See http://www.google.com/search?source...005-20,GGLG:en&q=site:www.psychlinks.ca/phpbb
Are you coming up for searches? Any site I've owned that has the Title and description removed ends up being buried at the bottom of the index somewhere. It's very frustrating. Anyway, aside from that - Keywords in URL help me on my sites - It's just another factor that's there rather than not being there I guess... I also think it increases the CTR in search results when people can see actual words in the URL, rather than post/thread ID's
Yes. Very definitely. Indeed, new members have said frequently that they found the forum by searching on a specific disorder, medication, problem, etc. My web stats for the forum also bear this out: specific search strings leading to specific posts or threads. And by the way, the able2know mod optimizes for post and thread title (or at least my implementatioin of it does, with the forum name at the very end): Example: http://www.psychlinks.ca/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2746 Look at the page title and cf. the post/thread title.
Are the referrers coming from Google though? I get traffic on the sites that have no title or description, but generally only from the other two engines. It's a nice mod - I'm gonna have a play..
Yes. Most of the SE referrals for that forum are from Google (by far). Number 2 for many months is AOL, believe it or not. Then MSN, AskJeeves, etc. Yahoo rarely. The forum generates separate stats from the other Psychlinks stats so these data are ONLY for the forum.
