    My advice: Don't use it! It is more powerful than you think (just like the continuum tranfunctioner)! Webmasters have recently reported weird Backlink counts, PR 0-ed homepages, SERP drops and other weird stuff. G00GELGuy hinted the voting system could have something to do with it...

    Disclaimer: the above should be taken with at least an overdose of salt...

    You should ask Anthonycea, he probably knows what they do with the data.

    I wonder what kind of things those little buttons actually do...

    Maybe I should vote :) for one of my sites - unless that will get me into even more trouble.

    The G site says it doesn't do anything for now... Still in test mode. They want yuo to click the sado if you are unhappy with G's search results too so I doubt it will kick a site out of the index :d

    It's just another thing which could be abused.

    If they really implement it, unscrupulous webmasters will go around voting FOR their own sites and voting AGAINST their competitors site.

    I can't really see that it will achieve anything useful.

    It positively hurts. While discussing a site's PR with a contributor, he told me he clicked the :) many times just to help improving the PR. Actually dropped from 5 to 4. :mad:

    if clicking a :) 10 times lowers your PR by 1, you could make any site go down to PR0 and stay there with a 5-liner. I dont think google will ever use that feature as a measurement for relevancy, it's just too easy to manipulate it.

    Any change in PR using a voting button is an open invitation to use it on competitors.
    Actualle any change in SERPS at all caused by a voting button are going to be used... in a bad way.
    I think the only usefull thing a voting button MIGHT do, is to help changing the algo (based on good/bad results) in the future.

    I don't think it's for PR or SERPs. I think it's to collect info from ther surfer as far as behaviors, preferences and shopping patterns to help them deliver targeted content and/or emails to you in the future.

    What if you searched with the G toolbar, and then when the results were served you clicked :) or :( depending on what you saw. Not after actually visiting a website, but before you navigated away from the results page. I could see how that would be beneficial. They should however put the button on their results page, not in my browser.

    During that same period of time, he probably scratched his head, drank coffee, ate, coughed, breathed, blinked, burped, and answered the phone more often than he clicked on the :) button.

    My theory is that answering the phone is what drops PR -- my advice is "Just don't do it!" -- is it worth risking your PR just to answer that phone and learn that you've just won an all expense paid trip to Cuba if you'll only come and watch 8 hours of commercials and pay for your own transportation and hotel room and meals?

    Okay - yes, it could be your mom... heck, can't she walk over and knock on the door?

    You can do what you want but I'm playing it safe... :eek:

    That would seem to to be right on. If you could hurt/help a site simply by voting that opens a whole new avenue of potential abuse. People would just start paying people to vote their competition off the face of the serp.

    This would have to be the most stupid idea to see the light of day at google.

    My only guess is google has a :rolleyes: hot new blonde engineer working for them who is banging the 'beta' boss and she had this great idea to let people vote... etc

    How else can you explain it?
