How to find out how many people searched for a certain keyword

I'm sorry guys if this has already been asked before, but I couldn't find it.

So, I need to know how many people searched Google (or Yahoo/MSN) for a certain phrase (or keyword) lets say in the last month.

Is there any free online tool for this?

I have an idea for a site, but I must first make sure the keywords of my site are higly searched.

I personally use the Overture Suggestion Tool which was suggested to you earlier, but my advice is always take those suggestions with a grain of salt. Just because they say a lot of people searched for that keyword, doesn't mean you'll get a lot of traffic from that keyword, even if you're in the top 10.

I was #1 for a while for a keyword which supposedly got over 1000 searches in the previous month, and I only received 1 visitor total from Google. I get more clicks for keywords which have no data on Overture, so bear that in mind.

thats the worst one to use. not reliable, and should only be used after you've already checked the better tools mentioned.

I think that the digital point tool is the best, you can remove the captcha by donating $150 the the Server fund.

LOL! So what about it gives you so much satisfaction? Please, do tell.

Is it the inaccuracy you like?

if you'd like to see first hand how inaccurate it can be, compare the keywords "charlotte north carolina real estate" and "charlotte real estate".

Now research the BETTER tools AND also check google.com/trends.

You'll see that overture gave a VERY FICTICIOUS number!

I am also looking for a quality tool that will show quantity of keywords searched for, but compare that to the competition for that keyword. Anyone know of any real good ones? For example I know "real estate" is searched for a ton, but it would be nice to know if "iowa real estate" Is searched for a ton but there isnt that much competion.

You can also try wordtracker or keyworddiscovery for more comprehensive complete results (paid)

You can use Wordtracker - the free version wil only show you MSN results. Or inventory.overture.com - this one will not show you competitors.

Overture seems to mix up the keywords so you do not know the exact terms. That is why you do not get the traffic they state.
