Well no, ahem, you can do a 301 with ASP too.

I wish ASP could do the URL rewriter to eleminate query strings. There are some components out there that do it; I tried a free one and it didn't work. So far I've yet to pony up the cash to pay for one.

Three submissions from me today... I would suggest expanding health to include an alternative subdirectory (maybe with further classifications for hypnotherapy, accupuncture, etc)... Also, I would like to see a seperate category for spirituality.

    Love the name, BTW :)

On another note, I have started a directory on the Deep-Mind site at www.deep-mind.com/directory (instead of setting up a links page). I would appreciate reciprocal links from any appropriate entry if possible, but I won't currently insist on it... would just like to see a few entries go in

    Re: www.deep-mind.com/directory

I see that outgoing links are not direct, but use a script to "jump out". Do you think, robots will follow them?

A directory script has to be static and not redirect to submissions or it will be poorly indexed if indexed at all by the search engines. Directories today should be search engine optimized.

My beleif is that since the link doesn't point to your site, you don't get anything from it. Since a redsirect link point to a redirect pge, it's that page that gets hit by the spider, NOT your page.

I also belief that except for 301s, spiders don't like redirects.

Much better to have links point right to the member site.

Spot the newbie :( That was not my intention, thanks for drawing my attention to it.

I used http://www.scripts.dbmasters.net/index.php?id=40 after a suggestion from expat... I notice that his version gives direct links... I will look at the settings when I get home, to see what the issue is.

PS... I've just seen some instructions on the support forum that should enable me to change the script to show redirects... Again, thanks

It is quite easy to rewrite URLs in ASP.Net. Just need a sub in global.asax.

Muchly hacking of script, and several beers later... I have direct outgoing links from the directory. One thing I have learned... PHP does not get more readable after beer

Much better, now if you can get the “?” out of the topics you will have a search engine optimized directory. That usually takes at least 6 beers to accomplish “LOL :D

Sure! After beer - only mod_rewrite can help:

    RewriteRule ^/(\d+)\.html /directory/index.php?ax=list&cat_id=$1 [L]
    Code (markup):

(the code above is written after 6th beer, as stoner3221 recommended - so there are at least 6 errors) :D

    Evil... ;)

I've obviously not had enough beer... can you direct me to a resource where I can learn what this all means... and do I have to put it in the Apache config file or can I use .htaccess?

    Sure, here it is:

    http://www.engelschall.com/pw/apache/rewriteguide/

    and

    http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html

Most of the commands could be placed in .htaccess
If you have access to httpd.conf, however - that's much better, because you do not need Apache to scan every directory for the presence of .ht-files (performance)

Apply to be an editor in the category you want your site in. Read the rules first - make sure that is where your site should go. JoeAnt approved my editor application and I submitted our site and it was approved - all in the same day. For free.

    <need new emoticon... drunk camaraderie :p :) )

I'm away for the weekend, so getting to grips with mod_rewrite will have to wait till next week, but thanks big time for all the help... I'll post any further questions under a more appropriate heading

I just found that you can add your info to the businessweek directory for free, at http://businessweek.directorym.com/

I added my site, but am not too sure how its structured, anyone have any more info/insight on this?

Hard to tell. Their after-signup blurb says:

You have been successfully registered in BusinessWeek Business Directory. Registered Companies receive free updates of Showcase Page performance and eventual inclusion in a free listing section.

The "eventual inclusion" caught my eye. As well; I can upgrade my listing for a mere $6000.00.

Doesn't look like any freebee directory is set up as yet.
