Am I the only one who finds the reputation system hugely amusing? I hadn't actually taken any notice of it until today. Do these systems get abused horribly by juveniles on other boards?

I would think so. There is not a whole lot of forums out there that can make this feature useful mainly due to juveniles they have.

I haven't had any red reps for a while. I've been a bit cheeky today though so we'll see what happens

VS: I always assumed that grey was someone trying to give me red but they were red already so it showed as grey - I learn something new each day.

There are actually juveniles that misuse it here too. I mentioned it in an earlier post. The system even here on a respectable forum like DP has failed and is now no more than a haven for people too cowardly to post their disagreement with you in public or PMs. Heck they even get to take a little stab at you by decreasing your rep count :D

So just laugh at it or ignore it all together. No rep system will ever be anything you can use to gauge anyone's true reputation for being a good poster on a forum as long as it's anonymous with no accountability. Make it so people can see and hold accountable those who leave negative rep and losers will think twice before misusing it. Otherwise it will continue to be worthless and might as well be disabled.

P.S. Note in advance to those reaching for the negative rep button for this post..... Thanks for proving my point ;)

I disagree. Keeping it anonymous actually makes it better - anyone is "free" to disagree with anyone else in a private fashion. People would less apt to voice their true opinion on a subject if that disagreement could become a subject of discussion in the public forum.

It's a voting system, and most voting type systems are anonymous. Look at any election is the US as an example - all anonymous becuase if they weren't people would vote in different ways due to fear of public confrontation or reprocussions.

I agree with Guy, I've signed my name to neg rep before and then it just turns into "Well, I'm giving you red rep because you gave me red rep". Sometimes I'm just too damn honest...haha

I can point you to two major forums absolutely ruined by a public rep system. They are actually more abused (I don't know if its juveniles or not) and because they clog up the actual posts themselves it makes reading difficult.

Amazing how people worry so much about this thing... heck, I never sign any green I give, I don't want people to feel obligated in some way to give a green back just because I gave them one. But it is just so funny seeing how some fellows over here throw a fit when they get a red one... :D

yfs1, I know one of the forums you are talking about, and it is true, putting the rep comments in the middle of the post is stupid, and even worse when most of them post stupid things like "I agree: because you are wearing a blue hat in your avatar"

Yeah... it probably would go away completely before going public. A public rep system opens up a whole other can of problems. You would get people only using rep because it's "politically correct" and/or to appease someone. And even more annoying would be people getting into retaliatory rep "wars".

Yup thats the one ;) Its used like a crappy chat room (no offense to chat rooms nintendo).

Every freakin post gets like 4 reps with long comments.
The ones that aren't chatting are using it like a reply button

All of my greens have been signed and my only two reds have been anonymous. lol, it's pretty amusing to me.

Only it is a shame that people get reds for there opinion. I can see if someone makes a totally bizarre and retarded post, and gets bombarded with red. But if someone has a disagreement, it's no reason to drop a red on someone.

My first red was the cliche "idiot" that other people besides myself have seemed to also received.

Hmmm... OK I think we're talking about 2 different things....

What I'm talking about is allowing you to see who gave you rep. It's not a hack... it's a simple option in vbulletin. Here's how it looks in your userCP:

I still don't think it will cause a lot of rep wars because like I said, cowards won't have their cloak of anonimity to hide behind so there will be less senseless negative reps to begin with.
