Does anyone have the statistics for Google's percentage of total searches carried versus major competitors, both for now and historically?

I am curious as to whether Google is loosing ground to the competition.

I've seen data like this in the 'search engine watch' blog, but it was a while ago, try site seaching that site.

Don't know about the percentage of searches, but there's an interesting article on www.alexa.com about the big 3's traffic stats.

The Alexa article says what we've all no doubt already knows -- you ain't got squat unless you're in Googs.

Actually, they are comparing search.yahoo.com and search.msn.com with google.com, wrongly assuming that everyone who goes to the homepage of google is there to use the search engine.

I'd say for search traffic comparison dper's article is probably more accurate, showing that Google is more than twice as big as Yahoo, which in its turn is twice as big as MSN.

Thanks for the link dper. I thought Google was over 50%, but I also thought they'd be losing ground. Now, if it was MSN Search with over 50%, Microsoft would be facing another anti-trust suit.

Interesting stats for Alta Vista. If I remember right, they used to be number one, and now they only have 2.8% and falling. Google would do well to bear that in mind.

I've seen the same stats as stumpygrrl. I find it amazing that MSN gets as many searches as it does, but all new PC's are automatically configured to the MSN start page.. how convenient is that!

the searcheenginewatch link specifically states that "Does NOT include searches at the Yahoo-owned sites of AltaVista, AllTheWeb and Overture."

omma magazine sez that google has 37.5% of the total searches, yahoo sites have 30.1%, and msn sites have 15.2%.

all i know is that google search results dominate in my webstats, and i rank really well in all the other search engines... they just don't send in traffic like google does.

Here are search engine traffic stats from a site I have that ranks well in Google, Yahoo and MSN.

    Google 70.5%
    Yahoo 13.6%
    MSN 9.8%
    AOL 2%
    The Rest 4.1%

So Google is more important to me than the survey would suggest.

Does anyone else with a site ranking well in all engines find this?

It seems that in many cases, Google has a higher clickthrough rate on search results than the other engines.

the question is what is the definition of searches and search traffic.

(Never trust a statistic you haven't faked yourself)

In terms of SE driven traffic I agree G is absolutely dominant but they can only deliver search-engine traffic (native or ad driven)

Y & M are portal style and have more channels to deliver traffic.
On pure SE traffic they are way off but our travel site for example now receives traffic from about 600 diferent sites - large (BBC etc) and small - a lot are influenced directly or indirectly by Y & M through content and rss etc etc.

So pure SE traffic is only about 55% or our site traffic not counting direct hits like bookmarks and repeats.

    Of this G is dominant 70% Y 11% M 6% and about 15 others

But if use the total site (search) traffic as base (100%)
G drops to about 45% which is still big but no longer scary.
