this is why I don't let people hotlink to my images. your stealing bandwidth and traffic in the one hit. That's a nasty black hat technique if ever there was one.

exactly...you put an image on your site that is not your own, and you are in violation unless you give the author credit.

Is this considered "image hijacking"? and if so, is it legal?

    Take it like this .
If use is appropriate it is "fair to use" .

Prevent yourself from using copyright images .
Legality depends on what purpose you use it !!

I have just used the trick at 3-4 pages but just for testing/appropriate purposes . It was by accident that i got so many hits , as i wasnt beware of this .

All images have an automatic copyright. If you place any image on your site without permission, you are guilty of copyright infringement. Giving credit does not give you a legal right to do it.

The owner of the photograph can demand a usage fee (they don't have to warn you in advance) and a usage fee of several thousand per image is not uncommon. They could also file a DMCA complaint and get you banned from google or have your host take down your site.

    Just beware of the risks.

Fair use is a doctrine in United States copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders, such as use for scholarship or review. It provides for the legal, non-licensed citation or incorporation of copyrighted material in another author's work under a four-factor balancing test. It is based on free speech rights provided by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The term "fair use" is unique to the United States; a similar principle, fair dealing, exists in some other common law jurisdictions. Civil law jurisdictions have other limitations and exceptions to copyright.

United States trademark law also incorporates a "fair use" defense. While the names are the same, the doctrines are quite different.

Hope this solves your query .

    For Better Results :

Please make sure you have enabled image indexing by going google.com/sitemaps , adding your site and enabling to index images .

This has also been added into the manual .

Fair-Use can apply to legitimate news agencies and some non-commercial usage. It doesn't apply to 99.9% of people on digitalpoint who are running adsense or other revenue generating means on their site (which makes the site commercial). Using any of the images in the manner as suggested is going to be copyright infringement unless you have permission.

I have no idea on this .

This would not be good at all from my opinion , i mean using google links for your own images .

You should ask an SEO expert on this .

Very good information. If I ever catch one of the bastards doing this to one of my copyrighted images I will report it to Google Adsense right away. Their TOS require them to own the content.
Usually I don't report sites, but I am loosing enormous amounts of bandwidth to hotlinkers which I blocked now (except google) and this post just pushed me over the edge. If copying the google url allows someone to hotlink my images, I need to update my hotlink buster script.
Bottom line: You found a way to steal content, hurray. How is this different to stealing articles and rewriting them? I don't know. You shouldn't be ranking for someone else's image and I just hope Google reads this crap.
Worst of all, the f***** bastards linking my images don't even give credit or place a link.
Also by hotlinking images, you give the other webmaster full control over the image on your site. I am not sure if you are just being plain stupid or what. The other webmaster can switch the image for an adult image and get you banned from Adsense within the day.
I did it once, but I lost interest:
    http://www.aguntherphotography.com/node/1698
Unless you don't value your adsense account or you don't give a rats ass about getting into trouble, I wouldn't recommend to steal images and I am even more surprised by the large crowd showing up and cheering to this stupid idea.
Would it be unethical to rewrite the image request to a manipulated gif that crashes your users browsers? I don't think so, I can rewrite whatever I please on my server.

Except you're hotlinking to Google and not the original image.. so it has no effect on your bandwidth at all. As for the copyright problems, I'm extremely doubtful they will sue you for putting their image on their website. The most they'll do is ask you to remove it. Chances are they stole the Mr Bean image in the first place.
