Are single page links better than site wide?

I've heard that single page links are better than site wide for SEO purposes. Is this true?

I think it make more sense for site wide links to be better for SEO, because you get more backlinks overall. After all, Text-Link-Ads does charge more for them. However, several people I'm exchanging links with do not want site-wide links, but only single page links. Apparently site wide links can hurt a ranking.

    Is this myth or fact?

It's a proven fact that site-wide links just beg google to sandbox you or be analyzed for link-spamming. Site-wide links are useless as far as SEO is concerned. I would highly advise steering clear from them. Single home-page links is what will carry most of your backlink weight anyway.

For new sites I would recommend single page links however, for well established site site wide links are an option.

Is this true? I though always, sitewide are better (not much as people like to thing, but a little better) than signle links, but never though this can cause a sandbox or something... can you bring any referals?

Too many of it will look to Google as spamming. Better stick to relevance, quality over quantity.

It depends on what type of sites. In general, I would lean towards having more pages since I prefer to have a site with lots of useful information that can be placed across different pages.

Link from page(s) is considered good when these page(s) has/have content related to your linked page. It maybe single page or sitewide. Mostly sitewide is not considered as 'relevant' links.

If your site is new than one link per site is best, but for well developed site site wide link is best.
If site have similar content to your site than it is better to add site wide link.

Just out of interest, how do you add a site wide link to an existing html site without physically opening each page and adding it to the code?

for example, I own a reference site about a local town and someone wants to sponsor the site with an add on every page, with many pages - how can I speed this up?

Considered as link spamming? Then links on forums signatures should be considered as link spamming too? There is no logic.
It still comes from one domain. I believe google is not that poor made robot, which can not recognise things.

    (just thinking)

In my experience the best is to have links from high PR individual pages.
