They get people to voluntarily give their email addresses or "opt-in". Anything else would be considered spam.

The best way to build a database of contacts is by asking them to opt in...through optin boxes. Basically, they subscribe to receive good tips and offers from you. Services like Aweber and Getresponse help you manage these lists so you can send them your tips and offers as well.

    Best,

There is a spam side of this. If you do not ask your users to enter their email to get news/tips regularly from you, that is called SPAM.

And people who does spammy posts obtain email addresses by writing simple bots similar to search engine bots which visit web sites and extract emails. Then these idiots send emails automatically to those email addresses..

I would stick to other forms of marketing. For example search engine marketing, hire some SEO pro's and get your site to the top of the searches. Also submit press releases and get peaple talking about your site. Use these methods of marketing as i would say spamming potential customers mail boxes is the wrong move.

I wouldn't say most e-mail marketing techniques don't work. That's how I got my first sale. As they say, the money is in the list. You just have to make sure your list is full of people who CHOOSE to receive more information from you.

Ask someone to sign up to receive email from you and have them enter in their contact information - Opt-in one. Then send them a confirmation email asking them to verify their email address and make sure that it is OK to receive future information from you via email - Opt-in two. Double opt-in.

Aweber is pretty good. They strongly encourage you to use double opt-in, but then manage to get the messages through fairly often.

They offer people the opportunity to sign up for ezines based on interest. Anyone who signs up, have their name entered into the email database from where they are sent emails.

Ezine marketing can help you reach millions of people in a single ad but you need to know how the list was compiled otherwise you may be helping somebody spam.

You can either buy a list or create your own list.

Buying a list of emails is essentially useless and is likely to get you accused for spamming. Not recommended.

You should build your own list through a double opt-in procedure and use a good 3rd party autoresponder. I recommend Aweber.

I didn't really believed in the power of e-mail marketing in the beginning but is now a convert and strong believer in it because of the good results I've seen. The money is in the list, at least for me.

You can Download my 36 page e-book "Build Your List Now" for more information. It's currently free as a special offer (i'm still working on the book). Well, almost free - it will cost you an e-mail address :)
