That's surprising -- I mean, webmaster sites don't usually get high alexa rankings due to the fact that no tech people actually install the Alexa toolbar. Even SitePoint (which I'd say is considerably more popular than DigitalPoint) has an Alexa Rank of 973.

The biggest/most trafficked part of digitalpoint.com is not the forums, it's the webmaster tools.

I noticed a several hundred thousand rank increase on my site this week as a result of 2 visitors that had the alexa toolbar installed. Maybe it's more accurate when you get into the top 100,000 or top 1,000 but way up where my site is ranked, I'd say it's wildly inaccurate.

I would guess it's only (relatively) accurate in the top 10,000.

True... but I bet most of the article readers are forum users. I get about 50,000 unique visitors per day to the free webmaster tools. Most of which don't venture into the forums.

I had a site that was around 200,000 on average in Alexa.

I installed the Alexa toolbar on one of my computers and visited the site once each day, clocking up 10 page views per visit.

Doing this was enough to push the site to around 90,000 - 100,000.

I won't be installing the toolbar again - but it kind of suggests a little experiment along the lines of the co-op charity experiment.

How many visitors with the Alexa toolbar installed would it take to push a "nothing" website into Alexa's top 10,000 or even 1,000 ? :D

    Congrats Shawn

I think we can safely say that it's fairly accurate when your under 1 000. My ranking of 2 489 222  I guess is quite inaccurate, might have to get the toolbar installed and clock some hits :) Everyone with the toolbar installed are welcome to click my sig-links :D

Anyone know how fast they update those stats?

Must admit, I tend to agree with you about the top 1,000 dcristo.

But to get a site into the top 10,000?

I'd estimate it would take fewer than 50 "alexa-toolbar" visitors, each viewing 10 pages per day, to get a site well into the top 10,000.

I'll even go as far as re-installing the alexa toolbar myself if we can get a reasonable number of volunteers for an Alexa experiment.

The great thing about the experiment is we'll know the answer within a day or two.

    Any other volunteers?

p.s. Just a thought. If anyone's thinking about installing Alexa for the first time, it's handy to use a program like Spybot afterwards to clear away all the trash Alexa leaves on your computer after you uninstall it.
