registering for free directories here, now I get spam

I have been using some of the services of the members here who offer free directory listings to members of DP.

I am grateful and will continue to do so, but I noticed today that the email address I have been using to do this started receiving SPAM this week. It is a new email address (2 weeks old) and this is the only thing I have been using it for.

Do members hosting directories here sell our email addresses to marketing resources?

It looks like I should start using an alternative email address like yahoo or something for things like this :(

No, there are many bots etc. that just index your mail.
If you add your site in a directory, it is required that you also give your mail, when your link is added, there is also your email address displayed.

That would make sense. I appreciate the quick reply.
A secondary email will be used from now on.

    Thanks

    No actually he is right.
I used my brand new email address too to submit my site to (DP announced) directories and a few days later i already received several spam mails advertising webmaster deals and programs.

The email address has never been used before so i guess there are a lot of jerk directory owners out there :)

Yes you do get spam from some people and thereis no doubt it is from submitting to free directories because I did an experiment using an email that no one else had. I only submitted to free directories with this email and it wasnt long before I got flooded with spam. Its just part of the "price" after all is it not? ;)

I get TONS of spam mail since I started submitting my sites to directorys advertised here and on directorycritic. But it's a small price to pay for all the free links.

Right, it is a small price to pay. So I keep on submitting, and I use an email address that I'm willing to allow to be spammed. And boy, does it get spammed!
