I'm about to start a PS3 related forum and need some forum software suggestions. Would like to stay away from phpbb as it looks a bit amateur ... is SMF any good?

IMO, SMF is much much better than phpBB and I would highly recommend it. I have one phpbb forum left which will be migrated to SMF soon.

Amateur? Any forum with a default/stock theme and NOT a single thing done on it to make it unique looks amateurish. A well designed forum with features that are needed is far from amateurish in my book no matter the script.

So .. free forum suggestion .. anything you're capable to change and make it look nice. Any script is good once you have the skills to make it good. If you are not a skilled admin, then not even a 10 thousand dollars script will make your forums look less amateurish :)

There are lot of vulnerabilities coming in phpbb3 this can harm your server too. Better go for smf. I did seo for one of my client for free smf hosting.

Either SMF or MyBB will do.
I'm a fan of SMF, so imho it is the best ;)
Good features, good security, helpfull community, some nice mods (although not as many as phpBB),...

If you are going to use a free forum software I would recomend phpBB. Its fully developed to a way stable stage, its good, and easy to use. Other softwares are still in early development, I would suggest this.

phpBB2 FTW - if you keep it updated, there's no problem.

phpBB3 isn't stable yet, but when it is, I'd go with that.

Invision and SMF are nice, too. Better support with phpBB, though.
