I like OpenLD's default template, but their functionality and features have left me wanting .. any more suggestions on other directory scripts?

For free scripts I have to say the one thing that OpenLD does have going is the simple clean template, perhaps too simple, but look at Dmoz it hasn't harmed them. :)

You'd be hard pressed to find a free script with more features that phpLynx it genuinely is streets apart from others, I have looked high and low to see if there are others to match it, as I usually get a load of people attack me when I say that!

The problem you'll have with any script is that there will always be something that dissapoints, with the lynx script it has the default template but that won't be to everyone's tastes.

Whatever script you choose I wish you well, always take into account that support is also important, and again phpLynx is not shy in offering this for free. Better stop now, getting to sound a little too enthusiastic here, have a go and you'll see for yourself why. ;)

Any opensource script I would have thought? Good avenue to look maybe http://www.codejunction.com/ or something like that.

Could you be more specific when you say you don't want to use the directory script for a website? You talking offline use?

I also recommend Phplynx and Indexscript. Both are easy to setup and customize. Phplynx has a few more features than IndexScript.

Openld is a good lightweight script that uses extensions and is easy to install, but difficult to template.
