I'm just wondering whether people here have found it financially worthwhile to put adsense on a directory. I've been resisting doing this because I think its somewhat ugly and also worried that it may reduce the perceived value of my directory to others (both webmasters who may submit or web surfer who may end up on a page of the directory). Is this an unwarranted concern?

Whatifinds second link is a little better. (The first one doesn't have a whole lot of info) The truth is the best money making combinations is to sell advertisements and have adsense that isn't too in your face IMO. Doing those two things, you can make quite a bit of money.
True, selling advertising (textlinks) and putting up adsense and you can make some money with a web directory.
I have a local city directory that does well with adsense. Considering it's a small city and the traffic potential will always be fairly limited, I clear enough with it for a payout each month. I find integrating adsense with the link colors of the site work much better (for me) than highly contrasted links.
One of the best examples I have seen is Mia's directory http://www.kingbloom.com/ He has done a brilliant job with that directory and I believe makes some good money from it (well deserved) Go the extra mile to break from the pack and you can make some dough
It is by far the best I have ever seen. I know Jeremy (Mia) has no problems sharing how he did it so make sure to be nice to him and he might give you a little insight
i have removed adsense from my directory now to see if my income takes a plummet, maybe it will even improve
I did quite a lot on my directory with my insipiration from kingbloom, and his recent submissions code sharing. See it at www.ru7.org !! I have 4k pages indexed, got a PR3, and is doing fairly good.
I think that this is the thread that honey is referring to: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=10215
If placement of adsense is optimized, it does yield desired results for sure. My directory alldotnet, may be not raking money, but it is doing good enough to fund its expenses.
well since removing adsense from my directory (it wasnt optimised or that) i can say that there has been a positive increase.
