How good is Alexa?

How accurate is Alexa? Is it a good indication of visitor levels to
your site. I know we have over 100 sites linking to us, but Alexa shows just one. Any ideas on Alexa and its credability? Thank you

Alexa is useless for traffic analysis, however it can roughly show trends in your visitor numbers that can be comparable with competitor sites.

As far as their backlink reporting they are about 8-12 months behind Google. Absolutely worthless for research purposes. Also see post #2 ;)

    Nothing at all.

I used it when my site had 100 visitors only per day taking very good position (25.000).

Afterwards, I stopped using the toolbar, and every month I was losing rank. Now with 1200 visitors per day i reach 150.000.

    good enough ah?:)

Everyone says Alexa is completely worthless and from an SEO point, and they’re right.

However, I know in a couple of industries that potential advertisers and site owners for reciprocal links use the rankings to determine if they want to do business with you. Most of the time the cutoff is a rank of 100,000 or lower, which is the mark that most people say is the point in which the ranking is somewhat accurate.

If thats the case then just use an Alexa Booster to meet their requirements and with 2 minutes work you're done.

That only proves how easily manipulated that system is

Yeah. I agree, but there are many ignorant people out there that actually brag about their Alexa ranking and think that any site with X ranking or higher is a great site.

Alexa is just a bunch of misguided numbers in my opinion and the net would be better without the people who try to sell websites just on their alexa rating.

Alexa can be helpful in comparing how much traffic your site gets vis-a-vis competitors. No sense in artificially manipulating it yourself as that doesn't really help your site at all. In most industries, there's no real incentive for widespread manipulation of alexa either. So, it does provide a rough metric as to how much more traffic you can get in your industry. There aren't really many other easy ways to measure that.

Where does Alexa actually get it's numbers from? If none of my visitors ever use Alexa browser, and Alexa crawls once every 2 weeks. How would they know who or what visited my site?
