Do u get ranked higher for a subdomain for that particular word.

For ex: will this -> love.domain-name.com get higher ranked than www.domain-name.com/love

It depends on the backlinks to the respective page. In terms of on-page SEO, it should not bear any difference..

(Shakes head at a7a7) Dude a subdomain is keyword.yoursite.com and it is a very effective trick that people us. Typically you see this on the blog sites. It is a BH technique that is typically used for ad revenue. I would say that it is a pretty powerful tool and if you want to maximize what you will get out of it create a blog on the subdomain and have the sub be a keyword.

(Shakes head at SmokeDog) What makes you think its a BlackHat technique. These digitalpoint forums are on a sub-domain, does that mean shawn is using blackhat techniques? No. Fair enough about the comment after for landing pages, but in general sub-domains do not yield the intention of black hat actions

    Also (Shakes head at SmokeDog)
It can go either way, almost all SEOing could be used in a BH or WH way...

As for the original question, if your main site talks about love then have it be a sub-directory. Else if the topic is not relevant to the main domain have it be a subdomain.

    Note:
When you use a subdomain its a diffrent site in whole.

I'd only use a subdomain if I was making a network of sites.

No I meant that Black hatters usually use this technique.... not that it is. How many times have we all seen (keyword).blogspot.com come up when searching? Tons...

And what is on those sites? Ads... How much money have I made doing it?

    Lots :)

Speak for yourself if you want to 'spam' the search results in order to earn money, but as stated in general the idea of people using sub-domains is not a black hat technique

It's generally best to be consistant, do one and stick with it, for example:

    dmoz.org -High pagerank
    www.dmoz.org -Low pagerank

Why? They dont use www for most links.

What can happen is that www = PR 4, not www = PR 3 and if you had just used one, you'd be PR 5.

You are saying if using a subdomain is better that using a folder.

love.domain-name.com uses a subdomain while www.domain-name.com/love uses a folder. Well, both have its advantages and disadvantages.

Not all sites are created equal, and as with offline business, each site has its own goals and priorities. Great rankings are much more about site content than site structure — although the latter is still important in terms of usability. If you stick to a long-term plan of building great content and sourcing some great inbound links, all things being equal, it won’t make much difference whether you have a sub domain or a folder structure.

If you go with a folder structure, be sure to build up substantial content and have useful and important inbound links back to your site. If you have loads of content and good branding reasons for treating each section as a separate entity, then sub domains may be the best way to go. However, there is a lot more work involved if and when you decide to add a new section — it’s not as simple as adding another folder.

Remember that one of the prime difference of the two is the way the content of a site is managed. Using a subdomain means creating another entity while adding a folder is just extending your content, thus, adding additional page.

    Hope this will help you...
