The benefit of DMOZ Clones

Discussion in 'ODP / DMOZ' started by Art, Jul 2, 2005.

    Hi all,
I've planned on creating a network of directories for quite some time now, but never quite got around to it when it dawned upon me - does running your own DMOZ clone give you any tangible benefit other than the large number of indexed pages? You'd have to be absolutely silly not to realise the potential of this.

So yes, does Google penalize or not give as much weight to DMOZ clones? Or does its duplicate content filter (whose existence is already heavily debated) kick in and stops (or reduces) caching of similar pages?

I'm making a number of them via different directory softwares so I'll also be able to give a good gauge on which truly IS a cut above the rest.

All opinions are welcome and desired ;p

I know a few people that have dmoz clones and many have their pages cached.
I don't know why G caches these pages, but you can easily avoid duplicate filters by taking the zml and incorporating it into a different layout.
Beacuse of the way I (and many other) think the DUP content works, you can easily hide almost any content by using different layouts, navigation etc.
Other than having a large number of indexed pages, used for either your own link network or coop. I can't really think of any uses for a DMOZ clone.

If you really want to be sure they'll be indexed, make sure you have more unique content / page than duplicate (a unique layout, a nice article on the side of each page, or whatever)

Precisely the use I was thinking for it. I might give it a go and let you know what happens. At least it won't hurt to try!

It's not dup content, since directory.google.com is also dmoz clone, in simple words. Yes, it helps. I have a dmoz clone at www.ukhit.com !!

Yeah, but then you get in... and one day some editor from a totally different category bursts in and starts deleting sites that have been listed for over one year...

Nice way of getting rid of the competition.
And then they say that editors have ethics... lmao

That is not true - DMOZ editors do not reject the majority of sites that are submitted.

However, if you want honest information about DMOZ, I would suggest this forum is unlikely to meet your needs.

The best thing to do is to submit your site to DMOZ, and don't waste any more time worrying about it, if it gets listed, great. Don't waste time asking on forums - it will be an endless source of frustation trying to figure who is telling you the truth about how DMOZ works and how important or unimportant it is to get listed in it. Your time is better spent doing other things to promote your site.

This forum is exactly where you get honest opinion about DMOZ or people can visit resource-less zone where they feed them editor's BS by truck loads.:p

I've had a few people ask me if I could import parts of the DMOZ directory structure, or even whole sections of the directory itself. I'm assuming this is acceptable as long as credit is given.

Yes it's fine. Making a subset causes no problem.

However, if you do not copy/create category structures in the same way as the ODP category structure, then you run into a technical problem. Attribution rules requre a link back to the category, but if you have a new category with combination of sites from several different ODP categories, then you cannot possibly do this. As far as I know, no-one has come up with an official answer as how to handle this situation.

    I stand corrected:

Honest and correct information= Digital point forum

Loads and loads of editor's BS = Resource-less Zone

    LMAO!

But remember, they don't even have the resource zone any more, seems they were too busy adding their own sites and deleting their competitors and couldn't wast their time posting over there, so they just decided to close it.
