The only thing that comes to mind really is size, and you should aim for something that will fit on 1024x768 screen. Other than that, these days you can pretty much do anything you want :)

    Just a quick note,
If you ever decide to slice your PSD, don't make Photoshop do the HTML output, too.
It is useless bunch of super-nested tables that will own you a dirty coded website.
Get a coder to do it properly once the PSD is ready.

    OK thanks.

What i plan to do, is when i finish my psd, i wont do any slicing or anything.

I will just tell the coder to do everything.

    Does that sound good?

If you can afford a coder, go for it, don't waste money on automatic code generators if you are planning a professional website.

also i suggest you make sure you have every element of the design (borders, backgrounds, images etc...) on seperate layers in photoshop.

it will help the coder out massively when it comes to breaking up the elements and putting them into html/php or whatever

You can actually have it output CSS/divs instead of tables (at least in CS2 you can, not sure about other versions.)

Not that I'd recommend it or anything; just saying.

I generally wouldn't aim to design a site to a specific screen size, although creating the images at the correct aspect ratio and large enough to handle quality of final images on export. For web design it should show how the site expands in browsers, and how it handles resize. Too much mentality for design seems to come from print or not thinking about the diversity of the web itself. Its another great aspect of creating sites for visually impaired users - really makes you think beyond finding a pretty photo to put in the design.

who ever codes it for you make sure it developed with valid HTML & CSS ...

and moreover code is aligned and should be easy to maintain in future

    - Don't go for a single layout that is optimized for all types of browsers.
    - Rather have separate template packs to be loaded depending on where the visitor is coming from.

Imagine myself browsing your tiny website on my 1600x1200 screen.
Give me a chance :) unless of course your main target are PDA users..

Scaleable websites generally need to be developed mainly in css as oposed to photoshop though. They are the best option but take longer to make.

Developing sites with style and content separated is an important next step after setting everything to fit your belief of what everyone is using/browsing your site on. I didnt say to set a definite size to fit for a PDA, a site should aim to fit every screen size, operating system, browser, user possibility. If anything CSS sites take much less time now for me than any other way. Using a combo of CSS/XHTML and a server side language is probably one of the fastest ways I've found to develop a unique and individual look.
