What are some shell/root access programs you use?

I have not accessed the shell or root of my server in a very long time...and have misplaced the software I use to use. I was thinking it was called userv but then am thinking that is wrong. I know it was a free software...but can not find it anywhere.

What shell/root programs do you user or recommend?
