I mean the rankings that have suddenly dropped to nowhere with google referrals going down up to as much as 90% for some people. Is there way to bring those positions back, or is it a case of biding your time?

Yes. If you lose rankings start doing things the Matt Cutts way with linkbaiting. Forget SEO and start building lots of content and natural links.

Well, quite a few people are experiencing big losses. If you look around, they are losing as much as 90% of the traffic from google on a particluar site. It could be the updates that are resulting in these wild flactuations.

My rankings dived last week and when I looked my index page + the rest where no longer in Googles cache! But after about 3 days some of my other pages started re-appearing in the cache. It took about 4 days before the index page was back in the cache. Since it is back my serps and traffic is back to normal.

I didnt do anything to the site I just sat tight and it all came back. So hopefully you are unfortunately experiencing the same thing and it will all come right soon.

plenty of people have experienced huge fluctuations - nothing to do with anything but the usual brainlessness at Google

No gray hat techniques used. You will find I am not the only one. There are other genuine people that are also being affected by this. I mean, since this started happening google has gone from being the biggest referrer to barely giving any traffic to this site. Pages are still indexed as normal.

I have been reading a lot that somehow Google has figured out or is discounting purchased links from the major brokers. Have you used them?

This is really interesting for me and I am trying to get as much info from everywhere as possible.

I have purchased a few (just a few) but who hasn't? I think most people buy a few, some buy a lot,yet I doubt they are being adversely affected. Even then, there should not be a total vanishing, perhaps a few pages, at most.

From reading around this forum, it seems that mainly people that have purchased text links from the big brokers are effected. Not trying to spread panic, it's just an observation.

I haven't. Matt Cutts states explicitly:

"Google’s stance on selling links is pretty clear and we’re pretty accurate at spotting them, both algorithmically and manually. Sites that sell links can lose their trust in search engines."

You can read it here: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/text-link-follow-up/

With all due respect, if this was the cause, it's your own fault.

Its sites that sell links that have problem, sites that buy them are fine.

I bought 100,000 for a new adult site and its doing very well. ;)

Yesterday, I was still seeing some traffic from google but today nothing. Also, it seems my keywrods have vanished from all the data centres hence no traffic. For a long time, there was really good consistency. Occasionally, there was some deindexing but not this vanishing like what just happened,This is just awful.

I did generate a siteamp and have all the pages linked to that. However, this is just a coincidence, I am sure. A sitemap should not affect your SERPS adversely.

You are not alone. I am one of them and so are many others over in other forums. For instance, my affected websites dropped to almost zero visitors from 5,000 visitors daily. That hurts bad. Absolutely nothing done.

I used to say that Yahoo and MSN were broken - I must now say that Google is losing its battle with spammers and is totally broken.

But it has happened to us before. The best thing is to wait - sometimes months - and it may be OK. That is what we did and will do this time too.
