SEOYak.com - A New SEO Social News Site

Discussion in 'Websites' started by tlainevool, Jan 9, 2007.

  1. #1
I have started a Digg-like site specifically for the SEO community - SEOyak.com.

My biggest problem right now is getting people to participate. I have had some people register, but most of them just vote once or twice, or submit an article, and then they never come back to the site again. Any suggestion on how to get people to participate more and come back to the site?

    Thanks

give them an incentive to participate...not sure what that would look like for you, but something free maybe?

Yeah, I'm already trying that. I'm giving away a free link on AdMoolah.com. But I guess that isn't a good enough prize. I might have to think of something else.

seoyak is a catchy name !!!

First impression the yellow buttons are taking the focus away from the text !

IMHO .. the links could be the classic blue !

Thanks for the input edomainz, I like the suggestion of changing the colors, I might try tweaking them a little.

Nice content. Nice color scheme, the only thing that I would improve is the menu design.

Thanks Kassi. Which menu were you referring to? And what did you think could be improved?

You contest is not very big, I actually skipped right over the link...you have to make things "pop" if you want people to see it as an incentive...

Services online, run because people get something as benefit from that service.
If your site can get people some benefit.
    It will run fine.

Try increasing ur traffic, and hence people will start using it for this case.

I like the thing you did with the popup of images when you browse over the links. did you write your own script for it?

That came automatically with Pligg, the software I use to run the site. It's basically an open source version of Digg.

I'm actually not sure if I like that feature, and I'm thinking of taking it off.

I am trying to give incentives. There is the normal incentive that all social news sites give you, you can submit stories from your own site to promote them. I am also doing a contest where you can win a link on the front page of AdMoolah.com. The more you participate, the more chances you have to win. I am also working on some new stuff that will give participants more incentives to participate.

How about using a revenue share (adsense) as an incentive? like the one they have on dp?
Dont know whether its a big enough incentive, but atleast its something.

Most users will see a limited amount of activity and leave straight away. You could chuck a fair bit of cash into marketing, competitions etc, but the best (and cheapest) way - as long as you've got some decent traffic is the old rule...

If you can't get activity, create the illusion of activity.

I actually have something up my sleeve that is something a little different from AdSense revenue sharing, hopefully I'll be able to unveil it later this week.

Yeah, it's the catch 22 of social sites. If it's not popular people don't want to contribute so it doesn't become popular. It looks like there might be a few people starting to participate now, so hopefully things will start to gather some steam.

I'm trying to avoid going that route right now, trying to keep things on the level. The site is less than a month old, so I'm hoping things will pick up on their own.
