Matt Cutts made a small reference to this on his blog. He basically implied that your PR is going to be linked to the preferred domain in most cases. It won't automatically leak over your www. PR to your http domain.

Will just take while for Google to complete the update. Search the forums for other threads on this...

I always use a 301 redirect to the www version of my site as soon as I register the domain. That way it gives Google plenty of time to sort everything out and saves on some unexpected surprises.

Guys, Google, as well as other search engines considers www.domain.com/index.html and domain.com/index.html as two DIFFERENT pages - that's why it is important to always link your pages in the same way - either with www or without it, but always in same way, otherwise you can waste inbound links linking them to two different pages.

Also check whether your hosting is redirecting domain.com to www.domain.com - this will link all inbound links and consume PR on right URL.

Yes but sometimes other people link to your site as a resourse for their site without you even knowing so you cannot control how they link. That is why you should use a 301 redirect to consolidate all your PR and link popularity to one single domain whether with or without the www that way you catch all the links no matter how a person links to you.

301 would be fine, although I think you can achieve this via mod_rewrite has well.

I think you can as well I just prefer to use .htaccess as it seems easier to me since it is just a simple text file.
