Grow slowly and .......slowly as regards backlinks.
If you want to open something new under google you may be find it beneficial to us an old domain or you just have to sit it out.

Even though I am not a big fan of that particular forum in general, web hosting talk has a great domain name section :)

The best one's, if I were you, would be to look for existing sites in google/dmoz that rank in the top 100/1000 and are obvioulsy neglected.

If you find domains/content like that in your genre you can approach a few and try and buy the domain/site cheap.

    Remember:
Many people who have a site that gets a few hundred day may value their site at 1million, for whatever reason :)

However, if you are polite and reasonable and can pick up a listed domain for a hundred -5 hundred then with the coop you can take on your competitors and make an absolute fortune and why am I telling you this?

Hmm..maybe I should delete this post.. it works for me :p

Age of the domain is the first stat I look at nowadays.

Here's a list of various Sandbox theories:

    Google Sandbox Effect

Opinions on this subject vary considerably. I do believe the Sandbox exists, while some people do not. The more competitve your keyword phrases are, the longer a new site appears to remain in the Sandbox. If your site is not out of the Sandbox in eight months, you have other problems with your site.
