    megaupload is popular because of adult video sites and other illegal sites allowing you to download anything without a valid license.

    Yeah, gotta agree with some of the other statements; porn and warez.

    Most warez sites will offer megaupload and rapidshare links. Megaupload usually wins since it doesn't cripple you after a medium sized download and force you to wait maybe 30mins for your next file. Also (disclaimer: I'm no m4d 133t p1r4t3 :D ) but i've been on some of these sites and a lot of people complain they can't download from rapidshare so thats probably why Megaupload wins...

    They had budget thats why. The rich webmasters get richer and the ones without money suffer because of them. But with a little cash and knollege of marketing you can make any site grow.

    Look at digitalpoint
    Early 2006 it was nothing but another site. But mid 2006 it shot up to the top 500 viewed sites on the web.

    Most of the free movie/appz/porn dowloads are clicked through megaupload , rapidshare has its problem with some download cap limit ..and also they have introduced their own toolbar..

    Satisfied users spreading the word is what marketing that kind of service is all about. Look at ImageShack and similar sites they are all virally marketed.

    It is very USEFUL to many user forums because

    1) many user use it to store adult/nonadult MOVIES--huge files that are normally not covered by other filesharing networks

    2) fairly easy to use not like Rapidshare.de that charges membership fees

    3) fairly long storage time unlike yousendit.com

    Megaupload has a new website out. It's sole purpose is to serve the need of hosting pornographic material for free. I don't exactly remember the URL but I guess it's sexupload or something? This way they are getting loads of traffic to their network of hosting websites. Megaupload can not be the market leader, Rapidshare is HUGEEEE. I do not agree that rapidshare.com is killing the original .de service. They are both huge and they are making big money off both the websites.

    Megaupload has also planted a lot of download restrictions. Apparently, they are finding it hard to serve the world outside USA :p
