It also depends on where the domain name is registered. If the domain is registered at GoDaddy, then backordering at GoDaddy will give you a higher success rate. Snapnames is good for domains registered at Network Solutions and Register.com.

I have three Domain names I want to pick up, one is just my last name .com and has someone has been camping it. The other two are currently unused domains that have a very similar name to my wife's business.

They all expire this coming year and are registered at three separate places:
    • Network Solutions
    • Tucows
    • Mobile Name Services, Inc.

I saw that you recommend backordering Network Solutions domains through snapnames. Any recommendation for the other registrars?

Well tucows and networks solutions both have an agreement with snapnames.. So they will be getting two of the names for sure.

The trouble is that for some reason prices almost always skyrocket at snapnames.. Some people at namepros think its money laundering.. I dont know.. I just know that you are going to pay alot of juice to pick up your name that way.. Almost certainly..

at least $60 in snapnames, usaully you'd pay much more than that if the domain has decent PR.

I have just tested that within my GoDaddy account. Clicked to cancel a backordering service over a domain name. Domain name capture has failed, backordering service did not end however. It's still watching the domain. If you cancel that, you get the following notice:
I proceeded with cancellation and was given back the credit to use it for another backordering. So no, you do not lose the money. You pay it and it goes towards the first captured domain name, whenever that happens, not matter how many failed attempts.

Is snapnames still the best if the registrar is eNom?

also: I'm a little confused about how snapnames works. I wanted to register through moniker and they directed me to snapnames for backordering. if I backorder through snapnames will they be my registrar or what?

.com, .net snapnames & pool is the first choice.
.us, .org you may also try godaddy, anyway, godaddy only cost $20-, and if they can't get the name for you, you cost nothing.

Wow . . . this thread has some info that is extremely dated and bad
Just to help out and clear things up. There's been major changes in what registrars auction names where.

Snapnames auctions Register.com, Directi , Moniker and a few other smaller registrars names (pre deletion) and goes after names that are actual deletions

NameJet.com auctions enom and NetworkSolutions domains (pre deletions) and also goes after deleted domains. Most good domains at enom mysterioulsy don't delete and end-up going into a private whois with a parking pag lander. . . .and stay at enom. It's rumored they hoard the good names for themselves

    Afternic.com handles auctions from MelbourneIT

    Tdnam.com is godaddys predeletion auctions.

Pool.com generally catches deleted domains and sometimes does .ca auctions.

This changes as often as the wind. . . The average consumer likely would be lost in the web ;)
