I'll just list a few high traffic/Alexa directories off the top of my head that I know have, and have bought featured links to (well most of them). Feel free to add to the list :

    BOTW (5,125)
    Alive (13,523)
    Aviva (8,179)
    Profit Geek (25,555)
    Ask (34,642)
    Directory Dump (46,610)
    Infinity (New) (61,697)
    Joe Ant (6,619)

Directory.ProfitGeek.com is riding on the main domain of profitgeek.com, therefore it doesn't really count:p So if you were to make a new subdomain, the count will be the same as the main site...no brainer, but for the unsuspecting visitor may not know that.;)i

Alexa is very unreliable but there is no other way to get a rough estimate of traffic.

Page Rank is also a very unreliable way of getting backlink quality count and people use it. I think PR is even more worthless than Alexa, google could have a raking with XXX,XXX of the most linked sites on the internet and not only pr1-pr10. :)

Of course it means something. But, the data becomes skewed when trying to compare different sectors, or if the website owner has the toolbar installed and tries to manipulate the numbers. Incidentally, you can often tell this manipulation by the number of page views per user.

It's basically like any survey, which has a margin of error. The Alexa number is relevant to the sector, but a directory shouldn't be compared to a site from a completely different sector. As the first post stated, directories were being compared to each other.

Like others have said, PR is useless too, but people pay a lot of money for PR links :).
