Here is the email I found well written and ended up trading links them. I've edited it as if you were sending it to someone:

I'm not much into the recip link thing, but it is definitely a very well crafted letter.

    The letter sounds too 'staged'...

more effective to personalize it more and put some passion in there... personalization..

My take: just be honest... no need to be so verbose about it. A short compliment to show you've read their site and appreciate its content (otherwise why would you want a link from it?). A concise request. Personally I find that a lot more attractive. One thing I can't stand is sites with nothing but news collected from other news sites pretending to be 'corporations' with 'CEOs'. Don't overstate yourself...

That´s the ticket! A reference that actually includes something that is relevant proving that the emailer has bothered visiting my site. Otherwise ... bin it.

    Dare anyone...

    Hi,

Noticed you are ranked in the top 10 for a search on the phrase I'm chasing. Notice also that your resource page has a very decent PageRank. Link to my site please, it would help my business so much, but probably not yours as I can only offer a link from this page..

    Truthfully,

    etc

I agree personalization really sells the email. Alot of the good reciprocal links I have recieved have come from me complimenting the site because I enjoyed the content, explaining my site and myself a bit, and asking for a review on my site if possible. Most of the time not only did I get the reciprocal link but great tips to improve my site.

I agree with the short concise email that is personalized. I don’t want to read through a long wordy email stating my virtues and how I’m the savior of mankind. I don’t have time to read how our crystals are in perfect alignment for linking and we have perfect synergy, blah blah blah.

I, also, don’t like the used car salesman approach “what will it take to get you in this comfy family website today?”

    Short.

I would straight off delete this email. No one likes to read long emails especially with the link exchange emails. Just add a grabber line at starting and thats it...rest of the information should be your website details etc

A well crafted letter , no doubt . But webmasters tend to get impatient with long letters from what i have seen. In my case it works with a short letter which is straightaway to the point !

I got a pretty generic request yesterday, but it was the last line that stopped me from deleting it. "Your link will be placed on our PR6 site" or something to that effect. Of course, where they place the link probably won't be ranked so highly, but I'll definitely check it out and see if it makes sense.

Quite a few of the directories in our recip dir are ranked well as well, and that's always been a good draw for people.
