When you think of Jesus Christ, the furthest thing from what you are thinking of is him being a marketing guru; however he is the best marketer ever to grace the earth. He did all his marketing in a time when there was no computers, no telephones, no mailing services and no form of distant communication. He has branded his product, the holy bible, at that era and for many eras to come, in a book that will last the test of time. His marketing practices and his words live on still and will live on for many many years. To describe his marketing practices let's look at his journey from start to finish.

    The product

Jesus Christ lives on for eternity through his product; however, this isn't any average product that he is marketing. It is a book, just like thousands of books that came before and came after, but just any book wouldn't do. This has to be the best book ever written, and the best book ever written must have the best author that ever wrote a book.

To be exact, Jesus Christ didn't even design or produce his own product, but the way in which he spoke and presented himself allowed for the product to design itself. He presented himself as the king of the Jewish community and a leader of men. The bloodlines and the heritage preceding Jesus Christ is not set in stone and is very controversial, yet through his words, style and grace he has been presented as a gift from god.

The product that was created in his honor and grace did have several key marketing elements that included the AIDA approach.
A - Attention (The documented past, present and future of the world, documented by a man from god who is also the kind of the Jews.)
I - Interest (The full documentation on how to gain god's favor, what god can do for you, how this will help you in your life and how it will help you to succeed.)
D - Desire (Complete design of all that is divine and great, and the words describing all that is holy and that which is god.)
A - Action (Doctrine of rules and orders that must be followed in order to enter god's graces. First action one must take is to read the holy book)

Now with every good product, a great marketing strategy is to give dire consequences if the item is not purchased. Let's say, for instance, if you don't drink water, then you will die, and if you don't eat food, then you will die. The holy bible gives a dire consequence that if you do not read and follow the words written on paper, then you will be banished to hell to be tortured forever. This is the most dire of dire consequences that a product could ever have.

    Branding

Jesus Christ composed and developed his own brand when he had graced the world with his presence. He was designed as the king of the Jewish community and with this deep branding tactics, he was able to develop the respect of many in the community. There were many people that didn't believe in him, and there were many more people that disproved him, but it was up to him to fight the battle and develop a brand of his own. The branding of god is some very large shoes to fill.

Branding was something that Jesus Christ was very very determined to make clear that he was able to walk the mile. He was the king of the Jews and a messenger of god, and even when he was faced with his life, he chose his brand over his life, and this is what every marketer has to make. Always choose your product and support it to the ends of the earth, even when your life is on the line.

    MLM (Multi-Level Marketing)

Jesus Christ is a marketing genius, and even though he didn't have much time to develop a marketing system, he did have the ability to develop and maintain a marketing stigma that would allow for the marketing to be done even when he was gone.

The first thing he did was to develop a following. He realized that no one would believe his outrageous claims at first, so he had to work slowly and convince people, one man at a time. The first, and most obvious choices, were his family. He was able to develop his family to back his claims, and imbued in them the same morality and values that he held in his target market. He had his first few followers through his family that helped to back his claims, but he knew this wasn't enough.

He began traveling from town to town working to convince people that he is the son of god, and that he has arrived to assist the Jewish community. After speaking with many people, and performing miracles to assist in convincing people, he was able to generate a following of several men that would listen to his every word. This would be his initial pilgrimage. His words were strong but not strong enough to spare him his life.

He was viewed as a rebel to the calmness of Rome, and his words were of treason to the throne. The longer he worked at converting people, the bigger the risk he was to Rome. Jesus knew that god had planned for him to be executed on the cross, and knew that his fate was set in stone. He told his disciples of the fate, and what would happen. Jesus Christ stood by his words to his very last day and maintained the branding in himself and in his words.

Jesus Christ was executed, like all other criminals, but his words lived on and his dream would never die.

His product was created, and his disciples began planting the seeds and spreading the word of Jesus Christ. Even though he was not alive to share the fruits of his labor, he had gone the extra mile to produce the fruits. He had done what no others would do, and he worked harder than any other marketer to pitch his goods.

To add a little bit of icing to the cake, he returned in a resurrection format to state that he is now joining god, and that he is in fact the holy son and the king of the jews. His branding all was documented by the different disciples and was spread through his words.

Over the years Jesus's disciples have multiplied from ten to hundreds to thousands to millions of people that study, read discuss his product, the holy bible.

Why was he such a marketing guru?

He did what many of us dream that we could do. He pitched the unsellable product, and he provided mankind with exactly what they had been looking for. He found a problem and provided the most divine solution for it. The problem was the lack of order in society, the solution was a set of rules, stories, documentation, history and future that would help to define mankind to what it is today.

The practices that he used include:
    - Brand Development (using a trusted name to promote a new product, standing by his word no matter what the conditions, going the distance even when faced with death, punishment, and torture.)
    - MLM (developed a following based on the promise of future riches, the following would refer more to do there jobs to create an even bigger following, every one person would refer at least 2-3 people (especially family members))
    - Long-Term product (To ensure that you receive what you are working for, you must devote your life to it and not question it. Your reward will come at the end)
    - Product Creates/Markets itself (Developed a following that would record and market his product. ie. community that makes your product for you and tells your friends about it, think digg.com/myspace.com/facebook.com)
    - Ease of Use (Product is very easy to use, all you have to do is follow a few rules, do something once a day and attend a service once a week)
    - Internal Product Marketing (Proper AIDA used allows for the product to sell itself, also in most cases the product takes advantage of freemium)
    - Innovative Design (Creating and designing a product that was different than the competition even though there was similar designs in the past)
    - Thinking outside of the box (When even his friends denied him and left him alone, his desire is what drove his to become the Jesus Christ brand that still lives on today)
    - Dedication, Desire, Passion (Some of the strongest elements to get a product off the ground)

Even though Jesus Christ was not well endowed, or did not have strong financial backing, that didn't matter, he had a strong plan and a distribution method that was top notch. He did not have a lot of today's technologies that make it much easier to market anything and he was working with a lot less. He was able to achieve because he did have the passion, dedication, and desire to achieve what he wanted to achieve, and to this day, he is the greatest marketer to ever grace the earth. We can learn a lot from Jesus Christ's marketing techniques that can help any business to advance, not just now, but for the test of time.

well, the bible appeared after he died, as far as i know... so how could he market a product that had yet to be invented? or maybe that is another proof of his marketing genius...

    Hi,

First day posting to this forum, so please bear with me.

You do not address an important part of Marketing, which is dealing with competition. How does He fare versus Islam, Hindu, Buddhism, etc.?
