Rank #1 for a one page site.

    Hi guys,
I recently noticed, in a ongoing seo contest, that a one page website was ranking #1 in google for a certain keyword.
Now everyone says, that Big G, loves fresh content, so how can a one page static html site rank higher than others for a keyword?
Any clues, as to how I can do this for my site also. (And, the site I am talking about is a MFA, how can MFA's have good backlinks?)

The keyword may not be very competitive.. in addition, fresh content will not help you to rank higher, it only facilitate the bots to visit more frequent. Backlink is still the most important factor for ranking.

oh..okay..I thought, that fresh and unique content gives you higher rankings..
Anyways, this means, that if I have a directory related site, and I submit my site to 20k directories, then will I be on the no. one position for "directory" keyword?
Because, Ill be getting 20k backlinks..

I'd also check whether the domain is perhaps older. Older domains tend to rank well.

But according to this logic, I can easily attain rank #1 for any low competitive term by 20k directory submission..

And 20k in Google. In Yahoo and MSN 2k probably or less. And 20000 submissions also not easy to do

Various links weigh very differently. 20K links in free (untargeted) directories is worth less then 20 wikipedia links that stay up for more than a week. Or 20 links from related .edu pages or 20 links from trusted sites in your niche. All better than 20000 links from the type of directories that get advertised here on DP.

I concur, and I'll tell you what, the only way to get those kinds of links is through some good ole fashioned link bait.

KH7 is right - Link quality is SO much more important than link quantity.

Google itself recommends finding quality back links. Links are still the king of SEO in my book. Its the only way companies can get their websites in high positions - they can simply afford the links.

Content is more to do with satisfying your user than SEO. However a larger site is more favoured by SEs.

Well, I got another example from a thread at dp:-
    search for "directorycontest.com"
and you will see a one page site ranking better than the others.

I don't think there is a software available to submit to 20k directories, and infact, I don't even think of someone doing a 20k directory submission:eek:
It was just an imaginary condition, to explain my query..I don't think it is realistic.
Moreover, directory submission in the best when done manually. Therefore my friend, you are on the right track.
There is no alternative to Hard Work.

"There is no alternative to Hard Work."

gotta disagree with that. I prefer leverage.

I have heard of some spamming software called Xrumer or something, its suppose to be able to submit to TONS of directories...
