    Hi Everybody,

I assume that meta description tag contributes a little bit in Search Engine Optimization, what are your views and comments regarding this?

    Thanks

Meta keywords are not supposed to count much for major search engines, especially Google.
But it cost nothing to fill them accurately, it's will not be detrimental. So better to use them.

I am of the opinion that they are there so use them.

I use the description tag to entice people to the site when they get results from a search engine

This is an often overlooked inducement to "close the sale" and get people to click on your site. The trick is to get your point across in as few words as possible.

As above said, meta keyword tag is not used by most of the major search engines. You can read the article here - Meta Tags. For google, it will search you meta descriptioin tag, title and page content for the keywords input by searchers, and if there is any matches, you page will show up in SERPs.

However there are still some old and medium size SEs still use keyword tag in their algorithm, and add a keyword tag will not harm you anything, so you'd better add it.

i agree that meta keyword is not used most of the major search engines,
but it is still usefull because it does't have any side effects (lolz)

it will be helpfull to include this tag and better then leave it.

I would say go for them. Search engines will never tell you what they are looking for. I think Yahoo does like them. And even Google shows them in the results. So, if they are catchy, they will get you good CTR :)

The description is often used by google as their description of the page, so I try and make them something that will entice visitors.

Useful for SEO? I'm less sure, although I always use them. I suspect they are used for a few weeks until the page is assessed in more detail, then ignored after that, but have no concrete evidence.

I agree that meta tag contributes a little bit in SEO. Meta tag is a part of Onpage Optimization. To get better result of SEO you should do Offpage Optimization like link building, link exchanges, anchor text, etc.

I'm not so sure that it really helps, but I do it anyways. Better safe than sorry, and it only takes a minute. Sort of a Pascal's wager type thing.

I still use every single meta tag, but still all I care for right now is the "description" tag, because it will be used by SE mostly to display what my site is about. As for "keywords" tag, I don't really care about it, but my site ranked 7 position (#1 page) on MSN for a keyphrase made out of 3 words, and that was after 3 weeks of being online.

IMO, use the tags, but care for "description" the most..

SearchEngineWatch actually did a lengthy post on the death of meta tags, but I am sure that are a few people that'll argue against it.

Without the meta description tag in my site i was on page 4 of google, when i added the meta description tag i went to 4 in google on first page.

IMHO meta descrition tag helps, i always rank higher when i add it .....always

keyword tag could care less about i have never seen anything change from that.....except in Yahoo
