Simple question for members who sell a product

On average how many orders do typically process a day?

And if you want to take it a step further how much traffic do you have to get to achieve the those orders.

I'm trying to put a decent business plan together and I'm assuming 5% of my targetted traffic would purchase from me. Currently an estimated 20% of my targetted traffic bookmark my site and I have not opened for business as of yet. I'm hoping I can sell to 10% of the customers who visit my site (assuming the pricing and everything else is where it should be) and anything more than 10% would be lovely. Thank you for any input.

A close client of mine does about 6-10 orders per day. 2% conversion for sale. About 30ish% bookmark. Unique product.

2% conversion for sale is quite usual. Don't count much on bookmarks.

5% conversion rate is slightly on the higher side...aim for 2-3% initially. once you have a customer base you can sell much more by targetting old customers

No problem. Also, the client has a high markup, but it is a unique product (> $100)

Make sure you have a way to capture email addresses for visitors that do not purchase on the initial visit.

I put out a newsletter about 1-2 times a month with special offers, coupons, etc. and offer a monthly drawing for those that have registered for the newsletter.

Some people may be interested in your products but do not want to make an immediate purchase. I have many visitors that come back later (sometimes months later) after receiving a newsletter and make a purchase. I think many people surf the 'net and forget about sites that interest them. Make sure you can contact them later to remind them about your site. Just be sure you don't spam or bombard them with tacky emails.

Great idea. Sometimes we focus too much on getting more visitors than converting the current ones. Also, place some social bookmarking links on the site.
