Been there and done that. The ramifications are enormous. I lost 2 weeks of uptime due to one host and I punished them into oblivion for being so negative and not wanting to compensate me.

The biggest thing I lost out on was from Google. Traffic was at it's highest point for my main site and Adsense was skyrocketing for me. Then, BANG! Server went down and never came back and they lost everything. Thank goodness my developer had a good backup. However, being down for 2 weeks affected the SERPS and also Adsense clicks. People lost faith in my site and I lost 75% of my Adsense income due to it.

It's taken me 9 months to recover.

I know how you feel. You get angry. But, this time. Try and get some good background info on your next host before you commit.

    Hope this helps.

    Col :)

    Whoops... That realy hurts.
Thats why its always good to have your own back at your hand, even better, a dedicated server.

To be extra safe you could have a script which creates a backup image of the server on a remote dedicated machine.

The script could be set to run once every 24 hours.

I just saw a client's site get dumped from both Google and MSN after the site was down for a day due to a billing error. The site contains only about 15 pages, but only a few remain--and the cached copies shows a message from the hosting company that states that the account has been suspended. Never let your credit card expire with automated billing. Most hosting companies will shut you down in a heartbeat.

They were #3 in Google for their key search phrases. At the moment, they are gone, gone, gone. It will be intersting to see how long it takes them to recover.

You might lose your rankings in G. One of my site just got out of sandbox and was ranking for "Headache" on google on second page.

Some problem came with the domain name provider and the site went down for around 7 days ....

After it went up it was deep into sandbox and traffic was down from around 350 + uniques daily (and rising) to around 70 uniques a day :(

So the answer to your query is that although G might not drop the indexed pages but it DOES effects the rankings !!
