I’ve been testing forum-based traffic and backlink building recently to see if it still has any real impact in 2026. Instead of doing aggressive link drops, I’ve been trying a more natural approach: posting discussion-style content avoiding direct promotion in the first message focusing on relevance and context observing whether links (when used) actually get indexed or ignored What I’ve noticed so far is that the response varies a lot depending on the forum quality and moderation style. Some threads get indexed quickly and even bring small referral traffic, while others seem to have almost no SEO impact at all. I’m still trying to figure out whether forum backlinks today are more about indirect traffic + branding, rather than actual ranking power. Curious if anyone here is still actively using forum posting as part of their SEO strategy, and what results you’re seeing in 2026.
I don't really think they impact search rankings that much anymore, but maybe it can help you get cited in AI search.
I'd track referral visits, branded searches and actual signups for a few months. If those numbers move, the forum is doing something useful even if the backlink itself isn't moving rankings.
I’d also look beyond whether the link itself gets indexed. I had an interesting experience where forum mentions brought in some traffic, but the main results came from other sources. For example, I later amplified some of that content through MGID - it’s interesting to test how well already-created content performs rather than simply sending traffic to the homepage. So I’d judge forum links by whether they bring in real users, not just by SEO metrics
Forum traffic and backlinks can still be effective in 2026 if you focus on relevant, active communities. Helpful answers can drive targeted referral traffic, build brand awareness, and establish authority. However, avoid spammy link drops or posting just for backlinks. Prioritize genuine discussions, add links only when useful, and measure referral traffic and engagement rather than focusing solely on link quantity.
