Hi everyone, I’m thinking about doing a few online courses and was wondering what people's experiences have been with them, especially as adults Is there an age where online learning becomes less effective? I’m not talking about children really, but more people in their 30s and 40s and beyond. I’m in my 30s myself and sometimes wonder whether I’d actually learn as much from an online course as I would in a classroom For those of you who have done online courses later in life! Did you actually finish them and remember what you learned? More importantly, were you able to use the knowledge in your job or business? I can imagine it’s quite easy to lose motivation when there’s no set schedule or teacher keeping you on track I’m mainly looking at practical courses around things like ecommerce, marketing, product research and running an online shop. I’ve come across things like Shopify Academy, Google Skillshop, Sellvia Academy, HubSpot Academy, Meta Blueprint. A lot of these are free or fairly affordable, which is tempting, but I’m not sure how useful they really are in practice I’d also be interested in any actual research or studies on online learning for adults, especially comparisons between online and offline process If you started learning something new in your 30s, 40s or even later, I’d really like to hear how it went. Was it worth it, or did you find traditional classes worked better for you??
Studying in your 30s is honestly a great idea — there's no age where learning becomes "less effective." If anything, adults tend to learn better because they know exactly why they're learning and can connect new concepts to real experience. That's a huge advantage over studying something at 20 just because the syllabus says so. A few things that worked for me and people I know: - Go for practical, project-based courses. Passive video watching has a terrible completion rate for everyone, not just older learners. Courses with assignments, quizzes, and a final project keep you accountable. - Keep sessions short and consistent. Even 30-45 minutes a day beats a 5-hour weekend cram session. Spaced repetition really is backed by research — the forgetting curve doesn't care about your age. - Use what you already know. Learning ecommerce or marketing in your 30s means you can relate everything to real products, customers, and situations you've seen. Lean into that. On the research side, studies on adult online learning generally find that completion correlates with motivation and structure, not age. Older learners actually tend to score better on self-regulation. And it's not just online courses — formal education systems are getting more accessible and transparent too. For example, in Pakistan, the BISE 11th class result 2026 for all 9 Punjab boards will be announced on 22 October 2026 at 10:00 AM, and students can check it by roll number, name, SMS, or gazette — details like these are easy to find online now, e.g. on the 11th class result 2026 page. Whatever you pick, just start — the first course is the hardest, and it gets easier from there.
