Hello, Today I am here to talk with you about a persona project I started a few months ago. I took a forum script originally developed in 2001 and completely modernized it to work flawlessly on PHP 8.4 and the latest MySQL versions. I converted and updated the entire codebase while carefully preserving the original design, layout, and visual identity, keeping the authentic early-2000s look and feel intact. In addition to compatibility, security, and performance improvements, I implemented many powerful modern features typically found in contemporary forum platforms, including advanced moderation systems, enhanced forum and thread management features, improved usability, optimized database handling, and various quality-of-life upgrades all without changing the classic appearance of the original software. Unfortunately, I can’t share a live link yet since the project is still running locally, but I’ll attach some screenshots soon. So, what do you think about this somewhat “unusual” idea? Thanks, M
It sounds like a good project to improve your experience. My main concern would be if you built in modern coding practice. Just getting it running is a massive undertaking but there are more things to consider.
Hello It’s a full upgrade. I’m only keeping the existing look and feel intact. It is easy because this forum originally has only 23 files and 6 db tables
I can see a small, highly specific niche forum potentially taking off, but generic ones don't work very well anymore. Selling the script isn't a lucrative idea either, since anyone can just ask an AI to build a forum for them and get a very sophisticated one depending on the prompt. Another thing to consider: even a small niche forum can quickly become a headache because AI companies will crawl it constantly, eating up resources. You'll need strong protection against AI bots. I deal with them every day, they're tough to block, as they mimic regular browser User-Agents and consume resources like crazy. Anyway, what's your plan? Personal use or selling it?
My idea was to revive it, not profit from it. I want to bring back a feeling that’s been lost over time. I’m doing my best to preserve it and protect it properly anyway. Of course, this isn’t some massive project, the priority is simply to make it work by normal 2026 standards. And honestly, how hard can it be to adapt such a small script to be bot-safe in 2026?
I look forward to your updates. The massive flood of spam coming your way will need to be dealt with by your systems, with you and your mod team just managing the edge cases.
